Not even after the two years it takes to get an associates degree?
Read the residency requirements for undergrad students. Your PARENTS need to have their domicile in Texas. In addition, you cannot go to Texas with the intention of being there for educational purposes.
You are not independent for residency purposes…or financial aid purposes.
What’s wrong with a college in YOUR state?
There’s nothing wrong, I guess. They are expensive, though, colleges are expensive everywhere. It’s just my dad’s been planning on moving for a long time and they decided to do it after I graduate high school (which is only month away). If they move, I wouldn’t have any family in the state except my older sister, but she’s not really dependable. I heard that it’s best to go somewhere that you’ve got family.
Thanks!

I’m moving there, though. Once I’m living in the state for a year, I’ll be a resident. The community colleges in Texas don’t give out of state students aid?>>
You’re not going to get aid at the community college and you’re not going to get in-state residency without your parents moving there. you need to stay in your own state and go to school
Sorry, I haven’t been clear. My parents are moving there and I plan on going with them…That’s the only way I’d be a resident, right?
You won’t get residency for at least a year. Your parents would either need to buy property or get a job.
Yes, your parents need to move there. Don’t go to school in the fall. It’s hard to get residency changed once you’re "in school’. Wait a year, then apply to schools.
Since you got into a UT with transfer possibilities, ask if you can delay enrollment for a year.
I know that you want to start at a CC, but you can’t afford the costs. A CC that is OOS for you is only going to give you federal aid…which isn’t much. And we don’t know if Texas CCs give loans…many do not.
OOS tuition at Texas CCs is $11000. That is just tuition. Even if your EFC is 0, you’ll only get a $5700 grant for that.
No, you were not clear…at all. Your parents are moving to Texas?
OP, Please listen to @thumper1 and @mom2collegekids - They know what they are talking about. It sounds like you got some poor advice from your HS counselor (or whomever it came from). Now, you’re getting good advice.
yes
I haven’t got into UT yet because I never applied there… Is that bad? That’s why I wanted to start at a CC and then after one year apply there and transfer if I’m admitted.
Move to Texas with your parents. Take a gap year and work, but don’t take credit courses (or you may lose your freshman status and access to freshman grants). Next year, when you apply to TX schools you should be able to do so as a TX resident. Make sure to put down the financial info. of BOTH parents on all your apps.
Also, you may need to broaden your horizons a bit. UT-Austin (and Texas AM) are pretty difficult in terms of admission. If you are applying after one year, the schools will still look at your HS record as well.
