Okay, so I'm almost positive I'm going with a mac over a PC (I do a lot of photography, and the ease of use sounds beneficial enough to spend the extra money). However, I can't decide if I want an iMac or the macbook. I started off looking at the laptops, because it seems like everybody gets a laptop when going to college. However, I have a laptop now (school provided) and I've been living in a dorm-like setting for the past 2 years (residential school), and I don't use my laptop all that often outside of my room. There are a few occasions where I take my laptop to a study room, but besides that, my laptop sits in my room.

So, iMacs are cheaper, have better memory, graphics, etc., and have much bigger screens. Why does almost everybody go with a laptop instead of a desktop?

If you do a lot of photography and know you want a Mac, I’d recommend a 24” iMac because of its IPS monitor.

None of the MacBooks has an IPS monitor, not even the Pros. In addition, the 20” iMac does not have an IPS monitor.

Why is IPS so important? It is capable of producing far greater color accuracy than TN monitors, which are used by all MacBooks and the 20” iMac. For most people, myself included, TN works just fine. But, since you plan on doing a lot of photography, you would benefit from greater color accuracy.

If you don’t use your computer out of your room, then an iMac would be a better option. Many people, including me, like being able to take it with me if something calls for it, or if I had to go home for a weekend, etc. (Granted I have an iMac at home, so that part is a stretch )
