Image and Cars at College

For Graduation my parents and grandparents gave me some money to buy a car. In addition to the money I have earned from working this summer, I am able to buy a used BMW Z4, but am also looking at the Honda S2000, Nissan 350z, and Mazda Rx-8. I will be a freshman at Stanford next year, and am concerned of the image of having a sports car, especially a Beemer, for a student at Stanford. I dont want to come off as a spoiled rich brat. Do many students drive such cars? Is there a biase against them? Thank you for your comments.

if u have a z4 you will look spoiled, but its Stanford so who knows.

This isn't a very toolish post...

u want to explain that?

Because it's such a stupid paradox to say you want a nice car but are worried that people will think you're spoiled.

I know a lot of people going to Stanford, and they've all told me that Freshman are not permitted to bring cars to campus. You might want to check on that.

Perhaps if you hold off on buying a car until the end of your freshman year (since you probably won't be able to bring it to campus anyway), then you'll have a better sense of how people would view sports cars.

yeah freshman can't buy car passes but I am told its really easy to get them off upperclassmen who dont have cars. Thanks for the advice stresed4college. I was thinking of at least waiting a term to get an idea.

okay, then i'll just give you my two cents: get the BMW Z4.

because, duuuude, it's a Z4!

A lot of people have the impression of Stanford being an academic country-club that hands our degrees in addition to pampering the undergraduates...

uh, why care what people think? if I worked MY butt off to buy a car, then I'm GOING to show that car off, dang it. show what you got. and yeah, IT IS Stanford, so who knows what OTHER kids will be bringing?

get a bmw who cares what others think
and girls will love it
unless you are asian

i would tell you to get the S2000 becuase its the fastest of what all youve named, and its got a small engine so ull get good gas mileage as long as you dont hot rod it... and plus its a convertible ;P

Rx-8s are slow and they have a huge 8 cyl rotary so theyll drain gas...on the other hand they are also the only car that isnt a 2 seater that you have named....and that might be something you wanna think about is that you wont have alot of room with those compact sports cars to haul around your friends and books, ect.

350Z - depends on what package you get...ive got a friend who has a base but its an auto..its a pretty cool car i guess...just not my style

i would advise against the bimmer... basically becuase whether you wanna think about it or not..when you park in those huge parking lots and next to the road at college...people are gonna beat your doors off and thats typical at any college...(its why one of my good friends brought his 3000GT back from college and left it and bought a cheap cavalier to take back to college)

If it were me i would get a good looking sports car for a decent price range (since youve got the money) as in the 15 - 19g range and then buy somethin like a bimmer once you get out of college and establish yourself

but thats just my 2 cents

"Rx-8s are slow and they have a huge 8 cyl rotary so theyll drain gas..."

Do you know what a rotary engine is?

sports cars are for flashy people with no tastes. get an SUV, like a nice black Range Rover.

SUVs are for people who are rich enough to keep up with the gas inflation. At its current exponential rate, that's very few people.

SUV's are for soccer mom's

what kinda car do you want? all the cars you listed are VERY different. Do you like going fast? do you want luxury/comfort or do you like flash?

S2k without a doubt

"Rx-8s are slow and they have a huge 8 cyl rotary so theyll drain gas..."

"Do you know what a rotary engine is?"

Dear lord god, LOL i dont know what i was thinkin on that one so i have no excuse....but the rotary 2 (not 8 cyl!!!!)...is killer on gas...they arent bad as long as you keep the speed down but ive got a friend who honestly fills his 04 up around 3 times a week..to me thats badd.. and yea like i said they are very very slowwww

And yea were talking about 30g and under sports cars....lol not 75g SUVs

yea...unless your asian get the BMW...well if you're hot you should get the beemer...because if not than people will think you're an UGLY spoiled rich guy...at least you should be hot!

the rx-8 isn't a great car. Low HP, not very good effciency and unique engine design. I heard it has killer handling but i don't think its worth it.

what's with the hating asians and bmws?
