My son went in for a final well check before he heads off to CP next month. The doctor made sure that his immunizations were up to date and then he got the menengitis shot and the pertussis shot(whooping cough). This was recommended because they are seeing an outbreak of it. They even made me do it!

On the forms we were given, none of these things are required anymore, but they are encouraged. You want to avoid getting sick if you can!

when are the proof of shots due by?

Same here. My daughter just had a check-up, but didn’t need any more vaccines. All caught up, including Menactra. Her pediatrician made her a copy of her immunizations anyway. Since she graduated from a public school in CA after 2005, it sounds like she doesn’t need proof. But, like momofmv said, it’s always good to be protected against these diseases, regardless. And it doesn’t hurt to have verification.

What 2Leashes said about student having a copy of immunizations/dates…good idea! Students might need that information for a trip to urgent care, possibly for participating in sports or applying for a job.

Thx for the reminder about pertussis booster. I read recently that its recommended even for people who had the 3-shot series as a small child. Said to myself “how interesting” and forgot to think about its application to my family. Note to self…do some research this week!

My son needed the booster and so did I, but my 8 year old does not. She is still covered. They are seeing a rise in whooping cough and someone in my area died from it recently. Our arms were sore for a couple of days! I also have a copy of all of his immunization records for him to take to CP. My son’s doctor thought it was interesting that they are not requiring proof at the colleges this year. She isn’t sure she likes that change. Hopefully students will still get the shots they need.

My son’s doctor didn’t have him get the whooping cough booster. I’ll have to check on this again, thanks for the info.

I would rec. the menningitis immun., there was an unfortunate death at my son’s h.s. and with the close quarters of college dorms…

I think this will be the year to get the seasonal flu shot, too. Available at the heath center:

The no proof if you were a in a public California school since 2005 is kind of loose. Middle school was the last time I recall the school having records.

I used to work in the high school nurse’s office and part of my job was calling or sending home notification about missing immunizations. It was a never-ending task. It was also frustrating that they were always changing the rules about what was required. I’m not sure *how *they handle it now.

I just checked my daughter’s immunization record and I noticed she had a Tdap booster in 2006 when she was 14.

Sounds good the h.s. you worked at was following up. I realized he was missing one of the last Heb. ones, and got it last month. Did your D have immun. for h1n1? My S couldn’t get it and prob. had a mild case, so dr. said he didn’t need it. Think we will wait for this year’s flu shot.
