Immunizations

I got my required shots today...six in all. Ouch :( Then my mom pointed out that at least I wasn't getting them on I-Day and having to walk around with sore arms....silver lining.

Ouch, I wasn't much better. I needed four, five if you count the tb skin test. I really don't mind shots though, as long as the needles are sharp! It also took me five hours to get all that...the "amazing" department of health was the only place that had all of them, and then they "ran out" of one and I had to go somewhere else...just slightly frustrating, but I missed school!

i had to get a tb skin test today, but i'm caught up on most of the rest of them. I think i'm going to wait on the meninjitis (sp) one and let uncle sam take care of it (the health clinic here said it would be $65, and i'm low on funds right now)

our appointment is manana....5 shots and the TB...had to have the polio shot done last week, not at our doctor. For whatever reason his office couldn't do the polio one, only our local community clinic could...huh??? Anyway..

We also did something that my kiddo thought of. Had an appt with our orthodontist yesterday about 'permanent retainers' put in, so she wouldn't have to think about damaging or losing the plastic slip-in ones. She figures to take her military training seriously and expects that to think about retainers might be a real pain. Turns out it would cost 375$ to replace a set of retainers and only 225$ for a bottom permanent retainer that holds them all. So she will be getting that permanent bonded wire put behind her teeth and not have to worry about her teeth and retainers again! Some others of you might look into this. Our insurance actually covers a portion of this cost as well, so this will be well worth the cost.

I'm having a hard time find a place to get my tetanus shot since USNA requires the new one with pertusis or w/e

Your local health department should have the new tetanus booster. FYI-Make sure you have not had the "old" tetanus booster within the last two years. I believe it is contraindicated to give the "new one" if you have had the "old one" within the last one to two years. Check with your local health department to be sure.

My daughter received her appointment, signed the acceptance, etc. and is waiting for her permit to report. Could someone please list the immunizations the academy is requiring so I can let the doctor's office know (in case some need to be ordered). I've always kept all my children's immunizations up to date and when my older daughter left for college last year all she required was the meningococcal vaccine. Reading between the lines here it sounds like my academy bound daughter is going to require more (she's not going to be happy). Thanks.

meningococcal
hepititas a
hepititas b
polio
tetanus/dipheria sp? (known as tdap)
mmr (measles, mumps, rubella)
tb skin test

I think that was it, or al least all on the sheet that i can remember. Have fun with those needles!

Tetanus/Diphtheria-3 required doses. Tdap (Td with Pertussis for Adolescents known as ADACEL or BOOSTRIX) is required instead of Td as a booster within the past year for all cadets.

Polio 3 doses are required with the last dose given on or after the 4th birthday to complete the series. IPV booster is required within the past year. (Can be OPV or IPV)

MMR 2 doses required or all three vaccines individually with the last dose given on or after the 4th birthday.

Hepatitis A required at least one dose is required before attending the Academy.

Menomune or Menactra are required within the past year. Menactra is the preferred vaccine.

Hepatitis B at least one does is required prior to attending the Academy

Note Indicate if Twintrix, a combination vaccine was used for HAV and HBV immunization.

Questions cal 410 293-2009

Also, a PPD test is required within 6 mos of I-Day

Maybe you can get started on this. We also have to go to the health dept. for some of these as they are not all available at the pediatrician's office. One more thing for the ever-growing to do list!!

Which form does it list the shots to be gotten? I wrote down berny's list, but shouldn't there be a doctor's form? The only one I saw was the one to list the whole shot record, it didn't say what add'l ones were needed.

if anyone pm's me, I'll scan them the actual form for people to get an idea

Navymom,
The required Immunizations are listed at the bottom of the form the MD office needs to sign. It has a place to list all the immunizations and then lists the requirements below. Is that what you are asking? The title of the form is
IMMUNIZATION RECORD FOR USNA APPOINTEES

Looks like I will be calling the doctor's office tomorrow. Thank you.

Looks like today was immunization day across the board. Funny. My daughter got her 5 + Tb, too. The bright side, she said, the push-up ladder is good for working out the soreness!

63 days!

Thanks from me, too, I didn't read the bottom of the form.

So the Academy will complete the set of three concerning Hep shots?

Thanks for the permanent retainer thoughts peskemom - I should have known! :)

Yes, you only need to have one Hep A and one Hep B prior to I-Day.

I am surprised so many kids are in need of so many SHOTS! UGH!

Has anyone else heard anything about if you have had the normal Td booster within the last two years, then you shouldn't get the new Td with pertussis?

<a href="http://www.cdc.gov/nip/vaccine/tdap/tdap_adult_recs.pdf%5B/url%5D">http://www.cdc.gov/nip/vaccine/tdap/tdap_adult_recs.pdf</a></p>

Pertussis Outbreaks and Other Settings with Increased Risk for Pertussis or its Complications: Vaccine providers can administer Tdap to adolescents aged 11--18 years at an interval less than 5 years after Td, particularly when the benefit of providing protection against pertussis is likely to be increased (e.g., pertussis outbreaks and close contact with an infant aged <12 months). The safety of an interval as short as approximately 2 years between Td and Tdap is supported by a Canadian study among children and adolescents. Postexposure chemoprophylaxis and other pertussis control guidelines are available at <a href="http://www.cdc.gov/nip/publications/pertussis/guide.htm%5B/url%5D">http://www.cdc.gov/nip/publications/pertussis/guide.htm</a> and <a href="http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/rr5414a1.htm%5B/url%5D">http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/rr5414a1.htm</a> [3-C].

• Shorter interval between Td and Tdap: Tdap may be given at an interval shorter than 10 years since receipt of the last dose of tetanus toxoid-containing vaccine to protect against pertussis. The safety of an interval as short as approximately 2 years between administration of Td and Tdap is supported by a Canadian study of children and adolescents. The dose of Tdap replaces the next scheduled booster dose of Td.

• Health-care personnel: Health-care personnel who work in hospitals or ambulatory care settings and have direct patient contact should receive a single dose of Tdap as soon as feasible if they have not previously received Tdap. Priority should be given to vaccination of health-care personnel with direct contact with infants aged <12 months. An interval as short as 2 years from the last dose of Td is recommended for the Tdap dose. Other health-care personnel (i.e., those who do not work in hospitals or ambulatory care settings or who do not have direct patient contact) should receive a single dose of Tdap according to the routine recommendation and interval guidance for use of Tdap among adults. However, these personnel are encouraged to receive the Tdap dose at an interval as short as 2 years following the last Td.

Jake had 4 shots last week. Sore arm....Was the most angry that he couldn't lift weights that day. But he's so glad he doesn't have to do it on I day.
