hi
Since all premeds need a summer research experience. Are those summer research prgs. competitive to get into. B/c they need l ike only a few students and give stipends to them. So it seems like they are selective in accepting an application for summer research prg.? But how competitive is it?? HOpe someone gets back to me sooooon.

Doesn't your university or college have labs you can work in? If not then I think theres this summer research program for minorities (I forget what it's called), but i know it's at Columbia Med, NYU med, and many other med schools. I'm not exactly sure how hard they are to get into. Maybe you can even try emailing profs at other schools. Go to the website of the university of your choice and look at the different depts. and write to some prof about why you're interested to work there. Include your resume/cover letter as well...btw what school do you go to? ttyl

i don't like the labs that my college has. They all suck. Everyone is busy doing their own thing. Once a week you get to make a solution. usually you just have to sit there and stare at the walls. I go to Hunter so that's why i was plannin on getting a research exp. somewhere else.

i have to tell ya, u will be doing that regardless of what lab u work in. unless u know exactly what u are doing, most undergrads don't.

I'm sure you've heard about this, but you can check out NIH's Summer Biomedical Research Internship, which has locations across the country - most notably in Bethseda, Maryland.

jeffl, that's not true. I do research in one of the most prestigious labs in the world under a ridiculously well known prof and I have to say the work I do in the lab is absolutely AMAZING and this isn't just me, but most of my friends have the same experience with other labs. I think what it comes down to is that if you go to a prestigious school with cutting edge research, you're bound to have more opportunities. That being said, I don't think anyone who goes to a less competitive university can't succeed in terms of research. You just have to take the initiative. Kneha101, check out this website and try to apply to one of the locations. I've heard fabulous things about this program. http://www.aamc.org/students/considering/smep/ if that doesn't work for you then let me know I can tell you about more summer research programs.

oh btw, do you have any preferences in location or institution because then I can just give you links to the programs at those particular places.
