Hey guys! One of the essays that I need to write asks me to identify a work of literature that has impacted me. I am wondering if it is better to write about a well known book or a more obscure novel. I want the admissions committee to be familiar with my book, but I don't want to use a book that is used by many others. What are your thoughts? Thanks in advance!

Use a piece of literature that has actually impacted you the most, not one that you think the admissions officers want to hear about. If you use a well-known book, don’t talk about it in a standardized or cliche way.

Also note that “impacted” does not mean you have to like or agree with the work. You could’ve hated the book, you could’ve liked something about it but hated its take on certain themes, etc.

If you are going to use a well known book, like 1984, etc…Make sure you interpret it in a meaningful and unique way. Show how it’s message (s) have really shaped who you are, and interpret it more than just “GOVERNMENT IS BAD WINSTON SAID SO”
