I chose a competitive major when I applied to USC. Will this impact whether or not I will be admitted?

Bump please. Can someone shed some light?
If I am not admitted into my very competitive choice of major (computer science), will I be rejected or will I be admitted to USC undecided?

Did you note a second choice major on your application? Was the computer science major you indicated Computer Science-Games?

It wasn’t games. Why? Is that one especially competitive for admission?

Yes, it is entirely possible to be accepted to USC but not accepted to your major, although I feel like it depends on which school your major is in (not sure).

We attended a “Discover USC” info session on campus a few weeks ago for the Engineering dept. We were told by an admissions director that, even though you put down a major on your application, all incoming freshmen applicants were evaluated together. This probably doesn’t apply to applicants to their film school but I would think it applies to CS majors as well. ALameMom probably went to bed already, but in the morning she will confirm or refute…

@jshain: I know that admission into engineering schools generally is more competitive. So does the fact that my intended major is in the engineering school mean that I will have a lower chance of acceptance (than if I applied to a school in arts and sciences)?

I’d like to know because I am not the strongest student. :S

I don’t believe you have a lower chance, because you are being evaluated against ALL freshmen applicants regardless of intended major that you enter(ed) on your application. That was my impression anyway after attending information sessions on two separate occasions with my son.

Every applicant is evaluated by the department if their first choice major AND USC in general. If that department does not accept them (and yes, the competition of other applicants to that major that particular year may be a factor), they are automatically considered as an undeclared major. Right, alamemom?

Take a look at past years’ acceptance threads. A small number of applicants, especially those who do not make it past auditions and portfolio reviews for creative Schools, but who do have excellent backgrounds for USC (right SATs, GPAs, rigor of HS work, LORs, essays, etc etc) will be offered admission as Undeclared majors.

Sorry, but I cannot recall seeing any who were denied at Viterbi who were accepted to USC CLAS, but it is certainly possible. Look at past threads!
