I'm interested in applying to Carleton in the coming year, and was wondering if anyone knew how hard the art classes were to get into. I am not an aspiring art major, but am still interested in taking classes. So many colleges have really impacted art programs that only art majors can get in and I'd like to know what I'm getting into before I apply.

Not only have there been no faculty cut backs, there’s been an actual expansion of the overall faculty size despite the recession. This was planned before the downturn hit and the school delivered. Work on the new Arts Union building is going ahead thanks to a $15 million donation by the Weitz family. If anything, by the time you’d be ready to start, the department and supporting facilities should be significantly enhanced, not pared down, compared to today.

You can check the class registration information to see how many register for art classes. Looks like most have a small waitlist. However, according to the art department website, there is an application process to register for the courses and there is a section of Observational Drawing reserved for freshmen each fall term. They also state that they try to keep a 50/50 mix of majors/non-majors in the classes.
