Impacted at UCSB...

Hello, I just had a few questions about UCSB, since i got accepted today

I visited about a year ago only to find my major, poli was impacted. So in my acceptence letter it has me as “Pre-politcal science”

what exactly does that mean? and how big of an affect does impacting have on a major?

I am a student who likes personal relationships with teachers, and intelligent class discussions which is why I am really liking the UCR Honors Program.

How different are the two, and how big of a deal is an impacted major?

That means you have to hold a certain GPA in the lower division classes in order to be accepted into the major.

oh ok. so what happens if you dont?

and what exactly do you do in your lower division classes then?

Here's more info on it:

http://www.registrar.ucsb.edu/majors/pre-political%20science-2004.pdf

You have to complete the 4 lower division Political Science courses with a 2.6 or above.

ok thanks

how much of an affect does it have though? is it dramatically different in an impacted major?

at UCR w/ a scholarship I have priority registration and honors classes led by the professor in both the lecture and the discussion.

Do the benefits of the higher prestige and better location outweigh the money, honors and smaller classes at Riverside?

Also, how much better is UCSB compared to UCR

Congrats on your acceptance to 2 good programs.

1) effect? Its just a way of limiting enrollment in the major. If you get into it, which shouldn't be too hard, there's no further impact.

2) Do the benefits of the higher prestige and better location outweigh the money, honors and smaller classes at Riverside? That's something each person has to answer for themselves. For a particularly cash-strapped person, the Riverside option may be a godsend. For someone who loves the coastal environment, UCSB is the choice. I can invent a million different scenarios, and the answer depends on the scenario. Every person is different, everyone has to come to their own answers. Its one thing to ask for information, its another to ask other people to make judgements like this for you. The burden rightly belongs on your shoulders.

3) "how much better is UCSB compared to UCR?" That's one of those questions thats just impossible to answer. Its like asking "how much better is vanilla than chocolate ice cream?"

I know this is a hard decision to make, and you are just trying to get more information. But some things just can't be answered without a crystal ball, others have no meaningful answer at all. How can you possibly compare 2 colleges on all possible dimensions and summarize it under "better", and BTW give a result that is applicable for every single person with all their differing interests and preferences? Well, you can't.

What you are facing is an introduction to the adult world, where you have to make important decisions based on incomplete information, decisions that matter a lot. Where to go to college is one of them. Where to live, what type of work to do, who to marry, and so on. All of these are decisions where you don't know all the outcomes in advance, and yet you have to decide anyway. It's not easy, its often frustrating, and sometimes in hindsight a different choice would have been better. Welcome to your new world :-)

basically until you finish your General ed/requirements for your major you are pre-poli sci

thank you? anymore

Here's an idea.

Call a grad school or two that you might apply to. Talk to someone in admissions and ask if UCR = UCSB = UCI

Much better indicator than anything you'll find here.

hey Theregicider, i am just letting you know that i am in the same senario as you. honors UCR + money or UCSB or UCI. i just hope i make UCSD, and that would make my decision much easier. i have already been rejected to LA though. i am now believing this saying more and more everyday, "God has a plan for you no matter where you go."
