Impacted Major Rejection, but Admitted to Non-Impacted Major?

Hi all,

Unlike Cal Poly SLO, CPP allows/encourages you to designate an alternate major on your application:

[Impacted Majors](http://www.csupomona.edu/~admissions/advising/impacted-majors.shtml?nav=und)

My daughter selected an impacted major (Civil Engineering) for her first choice, but selected an alternate, non-impacted major for her second choice.

I happened to notice this statement on the Animal Science Dept. website:

Therefore, be advised that even though you may submit an application to an impacted major and identify an alternate major, we may not be able to accommodate you in that alternate major. Please keep this in mind when applying to an impacted program.

I called CPP admissions to see if the above statement is also true for Engineering, but they said that it is not. My daughter would still be considered for her alternate major even if she is rejected for her first choice.

I was wondering if anyone here has been rejected to an impacted major at CPP, but still accepted under an alternate major.

Thanks!

I’m pretty sure that they will admit you to your alternate major if it is a non impacted major and there are spots left, but don’t take my exact word on it. By the way, do you happen to know her stats? I also applied for Civil Engineering and I’m just curious.

Edit: Just looked at the impacted page, and it looks like animal science is an impacted major. So I’m actually not sure if they will refer you to the alternate major…

Thanks for the reply. It’s unclear to me from the Animal Science webpage ([Application Process | Animal Science | Cal Poly Pomona](http://www.csupomona.edu/~avs/Impaction.shtml)) if they are referring to alternate majors that are also impacted, or if they just mean that the entire university is getting more applications than they can handle. If applying to an impacted major as the first choice means that one might not be considered at all for the alternate major, I’m not sure why they would encourage you to list an alternate.

Anyway, here are her stats:

CSU/UC W GPA: 3.96 (UW: 3.65)
SAT: 1260 (M: 650; CR: 610)
AP/IB Classes: AP Euro, AP USH, AP Engl Lang/Comp, AP Bio, AP Env Sci, AP Calc BC, IB Hist, IB Psych, IB Engl Lit

If you don’t mind sharing, what are your stats?

Yea I’ve never fully understood the alternate major either… anyway…

My stats are:

CSU/UC W GPA: 4.1 (UW: 3.8)
ACT: 29 Composite
AP Classes: AP Statistics, AP Physics C, AP Calculus BC, AP Environmental Science, AP Psychology, AP Government, AP Economics.

My stats aren’t too far off from your daughter’s, but I think that she still has a good chance of getting in. I’ve recently talked to the head of the CE department and she said that I would have no trouble getting in. While the supplement said that they will accept 300 students, remember that most of those students have pretty low stats, so getting in may not be as competitive as you actually think.

Yeah - i think both of you will get in as CE majors. I wouldn’t worry about the alternate major.

I got rejected for Computer Engineering 2 years ago and never got a word about Computer Science even though it wasn’t impacted… Unless things changed…?

Oh and another thing that I would take note is that even though they only have 300 spots, they will probably accept anywhere from 600-700 students this year, judging off of last years stats.
