How does Imperial College compare to GaTech, UMich,UIUC and UTexas ?
I applied to all the schools afore mentioned and I was wondering if Imperial is as recognized in the US. From what I have learnt about schools in the US, they are suitable for well-rounded students. Well I'm not exactly a renaissance man; I not interested in taking classes that are not exactly related to my major (Mechanical Engineering). Like xijs rightly said Imperial comes after Oxbridge in the rankings but I think coming to the US would be a great cultural experience for me. As a Nigerian I also think there are more job oppurtunities in the US. Do you think I'd be better off going to Imperial or Georgia Tech, or any of the other schools mentioned?

Imperial is regarded pretty highly here in the US. However, it is not very well known simply because the US has it's own list of top schools (harvard, etc.) I would suggest, if you aren't interesting in taking classes unrelated to your major, that you place greater weight on your Imperial app. In the first two years of study here in the US, much of your time is usurped completing required credits of random courses.

However, it's up to you to gauge this against your curiosity of the culture. It comes down to what you value more, and that's your call, my friend.

Imperial is postgrad focused. I'd rather be in a place like St Andrews or Warwick than at Imperial where more than half of its students are doing postgrad studies.

It's pretty high up. Please don't bash me now and tell me that rankings don't mean anything. People get all protective on these forums. It's just for reference.

Your joking right. GaTech, UMich,UIUC and UTexas don't even begin to compare to Imperial.
But Imperial ONLY has hard science. ie. engineering, Bio, Chem, Physics or a combination of those.

Don't go to the UK to study simply because you don't learn as much as you do in three years compared to four; and also Imperial has much less campus and college life compared to all the US unis you mentioned. Its campus is quite school as well and most activities are based around London, so not much on-campus student activities.
