Implying in College Essays

Does everything always have to be explicitly stated?

Is it bad to imply sometimes?

I read in one essay something with the likes of “I attract the flock of birds.” Well the guy was talking about attracting girls, but the implication was so unclear. avoid that.

Show don’t tell. But also don’t make it too metaphorical and flowery. It’s really a judgement call. I was honestly debating this idea today. Colleges read a billion essays; they don’t want to have to sift through and ascertain What It All Really Means. Keep that in mind.

Yeah, honestly the balance of show-don’t-tell and being personal, direct, and reflective is HARD… struggling with that right now…
