Hello, I am currently a sophomore in high school. Both this year and last year, I took honors lit, which was easily my most difficult and time consuming class. I received B's both semesters of freshman year and first semester this year, but got mostly A's in the rest of my classes. I was wondering how much of a difference it would make to colleges similar to Northwestern University if I took a regular lit class rather than AP Lang. My school doesn't offer any honors lit classes junior or senior year, so the only choices are regular lit or AP Lang. Thanks for your time.

Just to clarify, I would also be taking AP Physics B and APUSH and the rest of my classes would be honors (except possibly lit).

Is AP Lang offered?

Yes, the only options are AP Lang or regular lit, and I was wondering how much of a differences it would make to colleges if I took regular lit over AP Lang.

Most prestigious universities like Northwestern like to see you challenge yourself so AP Lang would definitely look better.
However, if you feel you can’t take the pressure, definitely take regular. But an A in AP Lang would look much better while a B in it would show that you at least challenged yourself.

I am sure I can get the A in regular lit with little to no effort, but I am also sure that with a reasonable amount of effort in AP Lang, I could get a B. In this case, is it better to be in AP Lang?

Colleges like NU have many students who both take the most challenging classes available and are mostly getting As. If this isn’t an easy feat for you, you need to be prepared that NU and its like will not be likely targets once you begin your college search. You’ll need to cast a wider net. That’s just the competition for spots at top schools like NU. Does your school have Naviance? Can you sit down w/your GC and find what colleges have accepted kids with similar academic achievement ?

While my GPA isn’t my strong suit, I have taken the ACT and gotten a 34 and have many extra curricular. Also, lit is my weakest class and I feel like I can get an A in every other class, so my GPA isn’t too low. It’s around a 3.8 unweighted currently.

My son got in to NU McCormick ED with a 5 in AP Eng Language Jr year and no AP Eng Lit in Sr year. But he did take AP Chem, AP Physics C, AP Stats, AP Gov and AP Spanish, and a regular computer program and reg Eng Comp Sr year. He freed up the time by getting out of gym as a varsity athlete. Good luck to you.
