In looking through some of the pamphlets/information from some of the various schools, my son has found that some of the LACs offer a BFA and some a BA. This may sound like an ignorant question, but when it comes to earning a degree in Studio Art, what is the difference between the two? In the long run (and if he were to go to grad school), is one more well-respected than the other? Thanks!

I think a BFA is more respected in the art world generally speaking, but I don't think a strong LAC art program BA would be looked upon any less favorably. I haven't applied to a grad program (still a few years away), but I do know that recommendations and probably portfolio count for a lot then. Therefore, I believe it doesn't matter a whole lot if it's a BA vs a BFA in these matters. However, employers might make distinctions between a BA and BFA holding applicant--I don't know for sure.

There is discussion regarding BA and BFA programs at LACs

The degree is irrelevant, with the small exception of those who want to go on to teach (and will then require a MFA anyways). The portfolio is what matters, in nearly all fields, and you can create a great portfolio while getting a BA, BS, BFA, BID, or any other combination. :)

Portfolio = job.
School = networking.
Degree = a piece of paper. That's it.

Thanks for sharing your opinions. I am pleased to see that most of you don't feel that whether the school offers a BFA or a BA is much of a factor. It would sure narrow down s's list for potential LAC's that are artistically oriented even more.

On a side note, RainingAgain, I think I remember you posting that you lived in Savannah, or at least could be familiar with the SC/GA coastal area. Do you know anything about the College of Charleston's art school? S is interested in it. He read on their website that they are receiving a huge donation from an alumnus which will be used to update their art offerings (digital media in particular) and increase studio space in the existing building. If you have any info on it we would really appreciate it.
