Importance of Class Rank to NYU?

<p>Hey! I'm a junior who's FREAKING OUT right now! I currently go to the top school in my state and there are many extremely competitive students here. Unfortunately, my sophomore year was horrendously awful. My chemistry teacher was arrested, then my history teacher, and my friend committed suicide. As if nothing else could possibly go wrong, my homeroom teacher died while I was in school and I was having a horrible time socially.. I basically said "screw everything" after all of that. It was a horrible horrible time. </p>

<p>My class rank suffered as a result. I am 156/212, and my unweighted gpa is currently a 3.44. I am working on raising it! Here are my complete stats:</p>

<p>GPA: 3.44 (will probably go up)
SAT: 2230
Extra Curriculars: Ocean Bowl Team (11-12), Model UN (9-12), Speech and Debate Team (9-12), Biology Club (President. 9-12), Chemistry Club (9-12), FORUM literary magazine (9-12), Green Team (will probably become president. 10-12), JETS (10-12), Tutored kids (10-12), helped start up/taught at an orphanage in India for disabled children for a few summers, volunteered at the VA and participated in research at the nearby medical school, etc. </p>

<p>I was thinking about CAS or Gallatin. I honestly ADORE NYU and I was wondering how significantly class rank would impact my chances?</p>

<p>Also, how important IS class rank to NYU? How badly will this damage my chances? If I explain everything that happened, and how chaotic my life was, do you think they will understand?</p>

<p>I would say in the grand scheme of things, it really doesn’t matter that much. In the Common App in the very end they ask you if there is anything else you would like to add for the reviewers of your application. Explain what your situation in Sophomore year was like and they may just let it slide.</p>

<p>Class rank can be overlooked given the rigor and ranking of the school. Even more so since your SAT is higher than average at CAS or Gallatin. </p>

<p>Just make sure your AP scores are great. :)</p>

<p>I got a 4 on the AP World History Exam :smiley: Self-studying while staying up on reedit for the WIN! I guess we’ll see what happens…</p>
