hey guys, i was just wondering, how important is the common app essay if the school also has a supplemental essay? will one be more important than the other? i'm applying to schools like columbia (ED), tufts, johns hopkins, wustl, northwestern, nyu, etc.

also, my common app essay is nearly 900 words (886), about a page and a third single spaced.. i know that's a little long, but i feel like every word counts, and i've gotten good reviews about it. do you think the length will count against me?

I’d say they’re all important; I don’t think one is more important than another because they all help the AO paint a picture of you.

If you could cut your essay some more, I’d recommend it. Then again, if you really feel that every single word is important… Just keep in mind that they read thousands of essays and applications.

Neither is more important, they first read the CommonApp one though so you should make that a bit more of an ‘impact’ one since they’ll form their first impression from that.
