I have been in US for 2 years as a college student, and I am going to transfer to 4 year university. I don't have SAT score, no EC activities. Due to lack of information, I thought GPA, essay, and recommendation letter are all I need. One of my friends who transferred to NYU stern last semester told me that I need SAT score and EC, at least EC to transfer to a good college. But I have time left less than 6 months until 2011 fall transfer. I don't think I can participate in any good extra curiculum activities. What are the good business schools I can apply with my GPA? (suppose I write a good essay) Or should I take more time to participate in some good EC activities?

One more question, I have C from speech class. If I retake it and get A, GPA will be 4.0. Do you think it will be worth time?

I would not re-take a speech class if my only reason were to change a GPA from 3.88 to 4.0.

ECs can help you, but imo, lack of clubs/organized activities will not particularly hurt you. What you do want is for schools to see that you are more than just someone who sits in a classroom. Think more broadly about ECs - do you play an instrument? have a hobby? work? volunteer? IE, what do you do when not in the classroom? Feature that as your EC, one way or another.

If you are not sure what I mean, post here as to what you do outside the classroom and we will help you.

What schools can you apply to with a 3.88? Heavens, how can we pull names out of a hat? Where do you want to be geographically? Basically, you can apply anyplace. But you do need safeties and matches, not just reaches.

SAT score? You will have to check each school’s website as to what they require for junior transfers.

I am an international student, so I don’t really care about location of college. But, I want to go west coast since I was in Maryland for 2 years.

As you said, I need to know safeties, matches, and reaches before applying. That is my question. My goal is attending 20th or higher ranked business schools. University of maryland Smith is 19th ranked. Are they all reaches to me?

I don’t have particular expertise on admission rates for undergrad business schools.

IMO, Top 20 schools - in any field - are Reaches for EVERYBODY. So treat them as reaches, and then go further down into the pool of schools for matches and safeties.

You can find transfer acceptance rates (at least, you used to be able to) from various sources (check the Resources sticky thread on this forum). Use those to help you id reach/match/safety.
