Importance of ecs to the applicants of 2011

yes it would really really early contact them in maybe late September early October the MX coach called my father but that was because a personal friend of the family went to college with the coach. i talked to the loomis coach at my interview as well as the team captain

Hcos: Congratulations on utilizing your hook very well! What do you need to prove to the coaches? Do you have to win some leagues, captain a team, or simply played the game for n years? What do you think works and what doesn’t? I love and play soccer, but our team hasn’t won any leagues.

pulsar: thanks here is a fairly short info bit about my soccer

i have played for soccer 11 years, i started on my High school team as freshman, My club team is ranked 15 in the northeast US and 3rd in the state and in the top 50 in the nation. I play on the State Select team (ODP) and was selected to the Super-Y ODP national pool. my team Placed 5th at Super-Y nationals. my team has also won numerous tournaments throughout the nation, won the northeast premier league and the State premier league. also i have received several letters of interest/intent from various NCAA I and III programs. If i was to list everything my soccer resume is longer than my academic resume haha

How would you showcase photography?

you could send in a portfolio to the Photo teacher and meet with him or her during your interview/tour

someone answer my question a few posts above

Wow, Hcos. Would something less stellar work? or you think the coaches won’t be interested? Do you have to try out for the BS team?

me or you… the coach is already talking to me about tactics and summer recruiting camps haha

i mean how high of a level do you play at

@2010 hopeful

ummmm…
let me think you could do a lot of charity work ETC i think that is your best bet i have really only had one EC my entire life so i wouldn’t really be the best person to give you advice on that topic

Flight# 7 on a Travel Soccer team outside school. We have more wins than losses. I have to find the total# of flights though.

@2010 hopeful: no there’s nothing you can do. U mean u need more in-depth or significant experience right? If you start something new now, by the time you apply, you’ll have involved for only a few months, that’s not even better than the ones you already have. But don’t worry, I had few ECs and still got in.

boardingschool, what BS did you get in at?

yeah i don’t think the coach can do anything for your you would have to be on say a flight # 1 or premier team

Hcos12893 what champions league team do you support? Any chance that your a United fan?

wow great feed back, i hope everyone likes this thread =D. please pm if u have any questions or what not. Hco is also a great source as ik him kinda personally haha

as hco stated point on: I doubt highly DOUBT I had a shot at all the schools even loomis without my hook

Haha I LOVE FC Barca!!! LOL tonight: Man U vs Bayern!

DUDE ARSENAL VS BARCA TOMORROW.
BEST. MATCH. EVER.

but yes, even if you’re not a superstar at any sport, having done multiple things can allow you to connect with the interviewer and such.

i had the most fun with my choate interview (coincidentally where i got in) because he was a soccer fan too. we debated real madrid vs barca. :D

i’m not really a superstar like hcos, i’ve only been playing 5 years. and i live in china so there aren’t any odp teams or clubs that i can join, but i’ve won a couple awards and i play a valuable position that most good teams lack in.

don’t think that playing a sport for 11 years is the only way to get into a school! capitalize on your strengths and, honestly, just have fun with the whole process.

Guys.

I have horrible extracurriculars. There is literally NO volunteer work on my application. My family is NOT wealthy and I am NOT a minority. The only extracurriculars on my app are basically two years of JV golf, Octathlon (not even Deca!), and a bunch of art competitions + the IB art gallery thingy, which I explained as an EC because it really can’t be finished “in class”.

I’ve gotten WLed at UChicago and WashU (BUT I failed to write the optional essay for UChicago and I didn’t make any effort to interview at either school), and I was accepted at Rice, Reed, and Vassar.

My grades are pretty awesome. My SATs were pretty good… but really… come on. I mean I know I probably can’t get in at any Ivies with my stats, but I did get into some amazing schools

sorry, this is a prep school thread. but i guess similar things apply to universities?

Indeed…? If you’re worried about ECs for prep schools, doesn’t it logically follow that you’re also going to be really worried about cramming them in for your university apps?
