I am an electrical engineering major that will graduate next semester with 3.8+ GPA. That makes me eligible for highest honors, but my school requires doing a thesis for getting top 2 honors. I plan on applying to top business schools in a few years, so my question is is it worth it spending time doing a thesis to graduate with highest honors?

grades and honors are not that important to top b-school. work experience is the most important factor.

I think if you are going to be an engineer, you want to put your best academic foot forward and destroy the GMAT. If you are able to get into a management role after a couple of years (my brother-in-law did this), your grades will likely matter slightly less.

I also know an engineer who went to a marginal academic school and was an EE major with near perfect grades. He got a 760 on the GMAT and had 5 years of work experience as an engineer. He got into Texas and Northwestern but was rejected at Harvard, Stanford, MIT and Chicago. Hope that example helps.

liu02bhs, while we all know that work experience is the most important factor, barring some extraordinary circumstances, you need very good grades from undergrad to get into top business schools.

I was simply wondering if business schools would care at all that one could have graduated with honors, but didn’t go for it. Or do they simply just look at the GPA and that’s it.

MBA programs are looking for people who can succeed in the work force. This is shown by recommendation letters from the employers. It’s best not to focus on just grades, as a 3.3+ GPA is sufficient.

As I said in my previous post, "while we all know that work experience is the most important factor, barring some extraordinary circumstances, you need very good grades from undergrad to get into top business schools. "

3.3 is not sufficient at all for top schools, that’s a horrible advise to give to someone. Just look at hbs profile, average GPA is 3.67 ([Class Profiles - MBA - Harvard Business School](Class Profile - MBA - Harvard Business School)) I am sure that is comparable to all the other top schools.

You seem to know everything so why are u asking for advice? GPA isn’t everything. I don’t know how many times it has to be said on this site.

Did u even read my original post? I asked a specific question and it WAS NOT about GPA specifically. And yes, GPA is not everything, but good luck getting into top schools with 3.3, you will need it.

Good luck to you as you seem very immature. Did I say that I had a 3.3? No. I assume you go to the ghetto “U” since you’re Miami. See how much weight that pulls at Harvard.

Actually yes u did say 3.3 GPA: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/business-school-mba/878927-should-i-get-double-major-if-i-plan-going-get-mba.html#post1064269536 Although I really meant that remark to be a general statement for anyone who has a 3.3 GPA. I am not here to start wars, I just wanted an answer to a specific questions.

Oh and BTW, i don’t go to UM(y be disrespectful to it?). Do ur HW and u can find out where I go very easily. Let me give u a hint, my school is better than urs in football.

If you go to UF, then that would explain your arrogance. I’m sure you fit right in. BTW, last time I checked, UGA still owns the series against the gators in football (46-39-2). Anyways, do some research and you will find that top MBA schools average GPA is around 3.3-3.6. And by top schools, I mean top 20. Harvard and Stanford might be an exception, but their education isn’t necessarily any better than the rest.

Ignore everyone and stick with at least the averages.

“If you go to UF, then that would explain your arrogance”

Go Gators!
