How important are HS grades? I know for many people they didn't do as well as they wanted in HS so that's why they're transferring out of a state U or CC.
If these people got a 4.0 in college + great essays + great EC's, shouldn't they have as much chance as someone who got better grades in HS?

Depends on the school.

Some schools don't require the HS transcript after earning 24-32 hours of college credit. Examples: Pitzer College, UTexas, UOregon, Oregon State, Ohio State, Worchester Institute of Technology, Virginia Tech, University of Puget Sound.

Some don't after two years of study. Examples: Bard College, UGeorgia, University of Miami.

Some require it, but give more consideration to college performance (usually after a year or two of study). Examples: UCalifornia, UVirginia, URichmond, UColorado, UWashington, Reed College.

What about for top schools? (Ivies, MIT, stanford, etc)

They tend to conside the overall record (HS included).

would 1 spectacular year in college w/ great essays, recs, and ECs make up for a mediocre (3.3ish w/ all APs) in HS for those upper tiered ones?

Perhaps. 1.5 to 2 years would be better. Even the top schools will take notice of a great college career when compared to a good (3.3ish) high school transcript.

Just make sure everthing else is awesome.

what about a decent... 3.9 unwieghted and 4.2 in high school..... + hopefully 4.0 at UCLA and good, essay's, recs, ec's..... after one year.....
would they make up for low sat's 1800ish (same range on all three tries) for Harvard.....

Rejected4life - why don't you consider some schools which don't ask for SATs for transfers? (eg, Johns Hopkins...). Your record is quite strong without the SATs and a lot of the very most selective schools are still concerned re SATs. You could also take them again, esp. if your college coursework might help you score better (altho I hate to see kids spend too much time on test-taking).

exactly i don't know if a fourth try would justify a high score even if i get one, also my new immigrant status, can back my stats only so much, but yeah thats why i am confused, a fourth try might be overdoing it...... so yeah i don't know what to do about those scores...
also i might be a sophomore transfer.. so i think every selective school, will look at the SAT's

any advice???
