Importance of interview...

I've already visited the campus, as I am very interested in applying ED to Duke this coming fall. I have not yet completed an interview, but I will return to the campus in August to take another tour and look around.

I have not scheduled an interview, either. How important are interviews to Duke? Is that a chance for the university to see my personality and who I am? What kind of things do they ask in the interview?

Thank you so much!

My interview was decent…I didn’t blow it out of the water, but it wasn’t horrible. If anything I felt slightly insecure about how it went. I was deferred ED and then got in RD. I believe my interview played a minor, if any, role in my decision. They consider the interview but don’t formally weigh it as they do the following six factors: transcript, course rigor, test scores, ECs, recs, and essays. The interview is honestly just a conversation. All my friends who applied said it was the same for them. For the conversation to go well though I would recommend being prepared to talk with ease about your academic and extracurricular interests. In my interview we did that for a little bit, and then my interviewer spent the rest of the time letting me ask him questions. In my experience they definitely don’t grill you with questions; in fact you end up asking more questions than the interviewer asks you! Good luck!

Thanks for the input? How important do you think interviews are in the admission process? Does everyone have to complete one?

Google the Common Data Set for Duke and go to Section C, in which you can see which admissions factors Duke has as “very important”, “important”, “considered”, and “not considered”. Interview is under “considered”. It’s one of the less important factors in determining your admissions decision. Most interviews go reasonably well and consequently don’t really influence the decision.
No, the interview is not required. However, if you are contacted for an interview, then by all means go!

Do applicants ask for an interview or does the admissions office contact you for an interview?

An alumnus from your area will contact you about the interview.

jroth - from your initial post it sounds like you might be thinking that you could schedule an interview on your next campus visit. In case you aren’t aware - Duke does not do on-campus interviews. Interviews are conducted by alumni who live in the area of students that apply. The interview is an optional component since Duke cannot guarantee that there are alumni that can be matched with every student. If you haven’t already, make sure you read the information on the duke admissions site about interviews - [Duke University Admissions: Interviews](http://www.admissions.duke.edu/jump/applying/apply_interviews.html)

If you are applying ED, getting your Duke Supplemental application as early as possible will give you the best chance of getting an interview.
