I'm filling out the Rutgers application right now and I've come to the personal statement section. They say that the section is optional, so do you think I should do it? I'm a semi-decent writer but my strong suit is more Math and Science.

GPA 3.69 (58 Credits) Sophmore

I managed a 4.0 the last two semesters, taking relatively difficult classes (Organic Chem, Calc, Bio, etc...) My HS grades are way below par. I literally (and sadly) had no ambition besides swimming at the time, but I've had a very nice upward trend since then. I'm in-state. Also had one withdraw from a summer class due to work interference, should that be mentioned in the Personal Statement if written?

BTW I have no idea what my HS GPA, class rank, or class size was. They ask for this on the app, but I sent them my HS transcript already. Should I just put N/A?

Sorry for all the questions, this is my first college application.

Fill it out! This is YOUR chance to let the admissions team get to know you--the real you! The you without the GPA and test scores. Don't look at writing it as a hassle, more over, look at writing it as a chance to highlight your strengths.

Okay thanks, I will write it. Does anybody know what I should do about the HS GPA, class rank... questions?

If you can, ask your GC for the info (at least GPA) and include it on your app. They will have it on your transcript but Rutgers processes a huge volume of apps and I've heard that like most state schools, their process is more generalized and impersonal than private schools. Don't know if there's much truth to that, but if there is, its probably in your favor to have a complete app and make it easier for them. By the way, I'm glad you've decided to take advantage of the personal statement, my test scores were really low and I think my ps played a part in my acceptance. Good Luck!

I'm sorry, just realized you're a transfer student. The wish for luck still stands though!

Okay thanks a lot. Other than all that do I stand a good chance, even with the very poor high school record?
