Importance of Personal Statement

Hi, here on CC I'm constantly hearing people wanting to know their chances of getting in a certain school. They list their resume and people usually give their chances based on that. When people give their opinions are they assuming the personal statement was really good or not?

Does anyone know how much a school looks at personal statement when looking at a potential student? Are there cases where students had excellent stats but didn't gain admissions because their personal statement was crap? Or the other way around? Can it be used as a "hook" like being an athlete or having legacy?

Any stories or info would be great!

While essays are definitely important, you still need the stats to be a competitive candidate at any given school. So, based on that, IMO:

Yes.

Much less so.

Not on par with being a recruited athlete. I don’t consider legacy a hook, more of a possible tip given a choice between 2 comparable candidates, an excellent essay might also provide a tip.

based on “insider’s info”, the personal statement is very important - which is why i started writing mine a year in advance.
