<p>IMHO, the value of NM status goes beyond merit $. I suspect, but do not have data to support, that NM status can be a significant admissions factor, even at schools that don't offer merit aid. </p>
<p>Most schools report the number of NM finalists they admit/enroll. You can suspect that what they report on, they also consider positively.</p>
<p>I know some who followed dragonmom's route and found it worthwhile.
Our school also factors in PSAT when doling out chances to elite programs like governor"s schools.</p>
<p>missing the PSAT because of the trip to Europe would probably qualify under post#20, but missing the alternate date because you don't want your son to miss a few hours of class time would not be an acceptable excuse--be careful if you want to go that route.</p>
