Importance of SAT/ACT

The middle 50% for University of Chicago is 32-35 on ACT and 1450-1550, which are some of the highest averages I’ve seen. How much does U Chicago value these standardized tests, especially when compared to GPA, course selection, and essays? The college data says that scores are simply “considered,” but is that accurate? These scores seem too high to be just considered…or is this the type student that the school mainly attracts? Thanks –

I wondered about that too. They are really high averages. My D and I attended a presentation recently where the ad com insisted that they are holistic. They also posted some stats about the SAT range accepted that was something like 1100-1560. Someone brought it up, and the ad com insisted that this was because admissions is wholistic. I researched it some more and discovered that UChicago does a lot of outreach to inner city kids as well as scholarships to first responder’s kids. I’m wondering if that’s why the range is so wide- that the lower end comes from select groups. I’m also having trouble digging up their CDS info. But I did come across this info: 85% CR and 84% come from 700-800; 14%CR and 15% come from 600-699.

BTW, I was talking to my friends D who suddenly had UChicago on her list and she said she was applying to it because it’d be easy to get into with the average SAT 1560 it reported. I gently let her know that this was only CR + M. I could do that because she was in a study group with my husband prepping them so knew her range. UChicago was sending her a lot of material and she totally bought it that they wanted her. And she thought Obama graduated from there so she was applying. I didn’t discourage her but just emphasized keeping safeties on her list.

So I don’t have an answer but I’m thinking that even though they report holistic admissions and maybe test scores as not very important on CDS, I really think that they are.

Sorry… 84% M in 700-800 range and 15% M in the 600-699 range.

The SAT range reported is 1170-1550.

It says here: https://collegeadmissions.uchicago.edu/page/profile-class-2018 that the range is 1170 - 1600.

Yes, I must have gotten older stats. But the 1170-1600 is not the one they reported either. It wasn’t 1600. Either way, that’s quite a range.

For at least the last 2 years possibly longer they have had the highest standardized test scores of any school. They mention this at admissions events and accepted student days. Although I do believe their admissions process is holistic, I also believe it holds some importance as it is always a seeming source of pride.

Compared to others, Chicago takes in little less qualified legacy and athletes, thus the higher score and gpa requirements.

I think they place a very high level of importance on it.

Yeah, I mean, it’s important, but i think it is holistic. I fall into that range (1470 if I remember correctly), but my Math was very low for Chicago (670 second attempt, 600 first go or st). I was admitted w/ a merit scholarship. I think other schools did/would have looked on that Math (+ the fact I’ve done none for 2 years) as a negative, but Chicago obviously didn’t that much.

Standardized test scores are likely a pretty big deal for them, but it at most gets you placed into class 1 for academics in their tranches. You still won’t get in if you don’t demonstrate how you’ll fit in on campus (which basically means show how intellectual you are).

If I get a 36 on ACT and 2340 on SAT. Should I report both scores to UChicago or just ACT?

What is the point of reporting two scores if one of them is perfect?
