Importance of SAT essay score alone

Do college admissions officers look carefully at the SAT writing essay score separately from the writing score, or does it not really matter? I am asking because I got a disproportionally low essay score (6) compared to my multiple-choice (80) for an overall score of 750. I don't plan on retaking the SAT but I will probably take the ACT because I am trying for a better separate essay score.

Well a 6 essay is kind of low, but I doubt most admissions officers will look at your essay score.

Honestly I would recommend retaking the SAT. You have a great shot at 800 considering you’ve already mastered the multiple choice. The essay is really straightforward. I’m sure you can score a 10+.

In terms of individual essay importance, I’m guessing that the overall writing score matters, not so much the writing score break up (MC + essay).

I did well enough on the Critical Reading and Math (1590 combined) so I think I’ll retake the SAT and take advantage of super-scoring if I don’t do as well on those two sections.
However, from the superscoring thread:

keep in mind, however, that even though your superscore may be, say, a 2300, it won’t look as impressive as a single-sitting 2300 anyway, so superscoring only helps to a certain degree, IMO

This conflicts with what I’ve read in some other places that say colleges that superscore only look at the final superscored result. Thoughts?

Well, the essay is really easy to get a 10+ on if you just follow the format they want and fill up all the space they give you. I don’t think the separate essay score is very important…anybody can get a decent score just following the format they want…doesnt really reflect your writing abilities

Your score is already pretty good so if you have time and you know your other scores won’t go down very much then I’d go and give it a try.
Unless you’ve taken it like 3 times already?

Well, I say the single-sitting is more impressive. Whether colleges take that into consideration or just look at the superscore…I have no idea.

750 is great, but if you can get your essay score up to 10 or so, that 800 will look even better. It may only seem like 50 points, but 800 puts you up a lot higher than 750. I say go for a retake

the OP has a 1590/2340 composite. honestly one doesn’t get much better but i’d be a hypocrite if i asked you not to retake. go look up essay advice on this forum and post your practice essays and follow the advice you get. a score of 2400 or very close definitely seems in sight for you.
