Importance of the essays

I made a grammatical error in the first sentence in one of my essays. Dang it. How much of emphasis is put on the essays? Will this bite me in the butt?
I heard that essays come into play more if I am borderline.
btw, I have 3.8 UW and 34 ACT. (OOS).

you will be fine

Glad to see this thread. My d left out three words in her essay which renders a sentence kind of confusing. She's apoplectic. She's OOS legacy, 30 ACT 3.9 UM GPA.

She's been obsessing for a month....

My essays got me in, but I think you should be fine jj, because your stats are so good. mine were very borderline for OOS (3.96, 29 ACT), so my essays were key. but i wouldn't worry about it if i were you. gl!

UMich is a huge school. GPA and SAT/ACT scores are much more important than essays. To be honest, I don't think give a damn about your essays and I doubt they barely spend more than a minute reading it.

i have to disagree with you there. my regional counselor actually emailed me telling me how much she enjoyed my essays. so if she went to that much work, i think they really do read them.

well you applied early from an area where mich probably doesn't get as many applications. not to say they spend < a minute on them, but definitely less than 5..

Not true. The essays are important. They form the basis for scholarship consideration, for example.

well, for admission purposes, they are not "that" important?

THEY ARE IMPORTANT!!! It is a widely known fact that they matter at nearly every college if you aren't a "shoe-in." But you have very strong stats, so you don't need to worry. Best of luck!

Essays do matter, but only in small private schools, ivy's, or small liberal arts schools. Just because schools like Michigan are so big and receive so many applications, I doubt essay's are given much importance for admission purposes. They might be more important for scholarship purposes though.

This doesn't mean that you should write a crap essay though. It's just that it doesn't matter if your essay isn't great because ultimately your academic credentials are far more important.

..I think it's "shoo-in"

but anyway, I've always thought the essays were very important, and the representative that came to my school reaffirmed that. they don't require three for no reason.

well obviously those representatives will say that. Would they ever tell you essays aren't important?

nick, it's better to be safe than sorry, right? i've been on tours where they flat out say stats are more important, so if michigan stressed the essays, they probably did for a reason. anyway, might as well spend time on them assuming they do matter than blow them off only to get waitlisted or rejected bc you didn't care.

should i call them and ask if i send in a new copy?

what grammatical error was it? unless it was incredibly obvious, i wouldn't, all it will do is slow down the processing of your app. i'd be willing to bet that 50% of the essays they receive have errors in formatting, grammar, or sentence structure anyway. besides, your stats are well above borderline, i would be shocked if you don't get in. good luck!

yea i really doubt essays matter- i spent about 1 hour on all three total, and i got in. state schools really don't care about these things-some kid wrote "i would rather die than go to penn state" on his psu app, and still got in. it's really just straight up GPA/Scores/Rigor. That's why the turnaround's so fast. I guess if your on the bubble they might read your essays.

I made a typo in mine, too.... let me know what you decide jjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjj89

I didn't proofread them... i'm an idiot. I wrote them and submitted them all in one sitting

Doubt it all you want. They read your essays and use them in the application. The "turnaround" is not all that fast at Umich, and I would like to even see someone try to write something derogatory about the university on the essay.
