Importance of "Top 10%" Checks

On the letters of rec from my teachers and my counselour, there are those boxes where they check, for a bunch of categories, top 10%, top 5%, Best in my career, etc. Do colleges actually expect teachers to really check that last category?

My checks are predominantly from my teachers and counselour are predominantly in the column right below "Best I've Ever Seen," although one of my teachers was a little harsher. I did get a few "Best I've Ever Seen" for the Potential for Growth column. So, is this bad? Or should they have been checking even higher?

Sorry, I'm just a little worried.
Thanks!

no the boxes dont have much weight. the letter/comments they write are more important. you could be the best in a teacher whos been teaching for 2 years career, but wouldnt be the best for a teacher thats been 40 years. dont sweat the boxes.

Alright thanks, the numbers just seemed so final! My teachers have taught 15 years, for one, and 22 for the other.
I really liked the one from my English teacher, it was excellent and really emphasized that she knows me well, and what she has learned about me. The one from my Biology teacher, she loves me and I'm always the only one who goes in for extra help after school, but it actually wasn't too good. Oh well.
The one from my Counselour is pretty good as well, I am happy with it.

Ok another question: Do they place any weight on the counselour recommendation? I actually know my counselour pretty well, and she likes me a lot, but I think colleges already know that counselours don't really know their students, so it doesn't seem like it would be too important.
Alright thanks!

it does hold a little weight but not nearly as much as all the other stuff. they know counselors and students dont usually have tons of one on one time especially in bigger schools. so unless the counselor says your a complete jackass or something it doesnt matter very much
