Importance of Writing Score on ACT?

My son did fairly well on the ACT (32 C) but got an 8 on the essay. He is happy enough with the 32 and doesn't really want to re-take the test, but wondering if some schools will make decisions based on the individual scores vs just the composite. All the other individual scores ranged from 30-35.

At this time, he does not have any aspirations beyond going to one of our state schools, but he does have a 4.0 and there may be opportunities to attend a higher tier school - he just isn't interested enough yet in the process.

Some schools use the writing , most only look at it (8 would be good enough). Composite it what matters the most.
