Importance of Writing Section on SAT

I know a lot of schools don't take into account the writing portion of your SAT score when comparing you to other applicants, they scale your score out of 1600 (M+CR). I'm a bit worried because although my SAT score is fairly strong (2300: 740 CR, 790 M, 770 W; one sitting), my M+CR score (1530) is a bit weaker. Is it worth retaking to improve my CR score for those schools who use a 1600 scale?

No it isnt worth retaking

If you’ve already gotten a 790M and a 770W, I’m sure you can get an 800M and 800W with another shot, even without studying. CR you can easily breath 760 it looks like. Definitely worth a retake. Show those adcoms your #1 EC is beasting those SATs.

You might seem a bit obsessive if you’re retaking the SATs merely to have a 60 point increase in one category, which isn’t even a sure thing. If you’re talking Ivy League schools, because other schools 2300 is spectacular, then I guess you should. But I’m pretty sure Ivies do consider your writing score.

Don’t retake it. Your score is fine the way it is.

Thanks for the input everyone!

@cypres, I am considering some Ivies and other very competitive schools so that 60 point increase could really help, but I definitely understand where you’re coming from. I don’t want to seem obsessive about my SAT score but then again, I only took it once.

if it was your first time, you should consider retaking.
