Important Admissions Question

Hi, I recently moved to another state within the past few months.

I kind of just had a field day the first time I went to college, and I planned on going back. My question here is, do I HAVE to turn in my previous college transcripts? Even though it's another state? Or can I just start on a fresh slate?

Also, is there any ramifications for this?

Thanks for any information.

Your next college will ask if you have any prior college –and they will check through a national clearinghouse of data. If you lie, they can simply reject you. Don’t lie. Your experience isn’t unusual.

Ramifications? You get caught in successive lies and are left wondering why no college will accept you.

My other reasoning behind this is I have to pay back student loans from my previous time, including money from the school. I can’t request or obtain transcripts until I’ve paid that back in full, which I cannot at this time afford. So what about that particular scenario?

Get a job, pay back your loans, then apply to your new school.

I have a job and I pay bills and support a family, I don’t have extra money at this time. If I did, do you really think I’d be on here asking this question?

JBMedia: your scenario isnt uncommon (outstanding loans to a previous college). Have a frank talk w/your target college. They will check and see that you have a prior debt. Whether or not they take the chance on you is up to them. But to try to hide it just won’t work. Colleges are defensive minded about these issues. They will check. So you just need to make the best of it.

Unfortunately, there’s not really a way around this. Short of a lien and legal action, transcripts are about the only leverage colleges have to make sure students pay their bills after leaving. Your prospective new college is going to (rightly, really) wonder if you’re going to default on their bill too.

You need to contact your old school and see if you can set up a payment plan.
