Important Application Question (Please respond!)

On the part that says:
9. Please attach a resume or separate page describing your community, arts, leadership, athletic, family and other extracurricular activities and hobbies in the order of interest to you. Describe these activities in a way that tells us what they are and, more importantly, what they mean to you.

Should I make a numbered list and just write a paragraph for each? (That's what I'm doing) What's a good number of activities to have? With the ones below I have 16

Should I also include things like this---they're achievements and the tests I guess count as activities

National Latin Exam 2004 Latin I (Maxima Cum Laude)
National Latin Exam 2005 Latin II (Magna Cum Laude)
Honor Roll (grade 9, 10, 11)
Participated in AMC Math Competition 2005 (America Math Contest)
Will participate this year AMC 2007
Participated in National Latin Exam 2006
Will participate in National Latin Exam 2007

Also, is it bad that I'm submitting it the last day???

Also, do you think I have a good chance of being admitted out of state with a GPA of 3.67, and an SAT of 1760? CR 600 Math 580 Writing 580

I think you should put math team or Latin club instead of the tests. That would be more like the activities they are asking about. And try not to put Honor Roll. Almost everyone gets that.

I made a numbered list, with a paragraph for each, in the order of interests.

i dunno about your chances, since i'm no expert.

I had to make a resume for a class already, so I just attached it.

ya i had to do a resume for class too, so i just sent that.
i didnt have any paragraph with descriptions, just list of actvities/achievements, and years of participation.

DO NOT WRITE PARAGRAPHS FOR EACH ACTIVITIES!
write a bullet for the title then describe (1 line) what it is under it.

GPA of 3.67, and an SAT of 1760? CR 600 Math 580 Writing 580

that is probably not good enough. You are below average on both. The average is about 4.0 weighted and 1320/1600 or 2000/2400

omg this is horrible advice. My activites paper was an essay. If its not an essay just dont submitt it dude. one line for each thing you did is'nt gonna describe you. write a one page essay and mention them all. this is the best advice.

According to US News, UMD's stats for
SAT scores (25/75 percentile):
Verbal:580 – 670
Math: 600 – 700
Combined: 1180 – 1370

When D sent her application, her "resume" was constructed like a work resume--different sections for grades, classes, awards, etc. They aren't expecting an essay---a listing is easier to read quickly. However, as long as you provided the information, maybe an essay would be a welcome relief to all the bulleted lists they get!

I called UMD, and they said a simple resume was fine. You don't need to write paragraphs activities just simple explanations.

Thanks guys so much! All I have to do is wait now. I wrote a good amount, and I submitted it before I even got responses from you guys. But still good advice nonetheless...
THANKS A LOT chaoses for telling me I'm not good enough. That made me feel SOOOO much better (I hope you can read sarcasm).
Anyway public schools in Maryland have way easier standards than schools in VA, so I hope they notice that. 93-100 as compared to your 90-100

sarpash, chill out. don't ask for input if you're going to get mad when people give an honest opinion.

I think you have a decent chance.

play nice... :P

sorry, what i meant for not good enough was as compared to the average accepted applicant. I don't know you personally so I don't mean to offend you. If you just post chances online hoping for people to say ur accepted to make you feel better, that's good too (i know the wait period is painful). The truth is things sometimes doesn't come as you wish. You gotta expect the worst. I, myself, WAS REJECTED by UMD couple years ago. You wanna see my stats?

760 Math 410 Verbal
3.8 unweighted gpa
~4.17 weighted
Maryland resident
Minority status
low income family

I literally beat 98% of the nation in math but my english wasn't good enough (I came here in 10th grade). They told me to take the TOEFL instead but there are only 1 / month and you have to wait 4-6 weeks for the result. I didn't think it's gonna come in ontime for them to make the decision that's why I didn't waste $150 to take it and left the application as it was. I'm a grad student now at umd.

maybe ur minority status helps a bit and ur awards & EC's are probably good. But ur out of state and that's a disadvantage. You need those strong rec letters and EC's. Good luck!

I don't mean to be a jerk, I just am sometimes...anyway thanks for the advice and stuff. Looking on this site makes me feel like an idiot...ppls GPAs and SATs are really up there. But I've also heard from people that a lot of ppl they know that aren't so smart have gotten in. I dunno. And how'd you know I'm a minority? (I don't remember writing it anywhere). I did write my essay on the diversity I can bring to UMD.

Different question...
Do you guys know why the school has received everything but my teacher recommendation? It has my counselor recommendation and transcript, but my school sent the teacher rec with it, and that was right around December 20ish. If they were both sent together, I'd guess they'd both be shown as "received"...or is the school just slow?

don't worry about it. the school is still probably in the process of sorting out all the mails.
