I'm going to college next year, but I also have a strong interest in becoming a movie director. Besides going to a film school, how else can I achieve this????

By making films. It doesn’t get much simpler than that.

Don’t bother with film school unless it’s a good one with connections; USC, NYU, etc.

yeah explain where i can learn how to make films man. Yeah film school was like 10 grand for one year.

Get a camera and do a Google search.

its a little more complicated than that…

You are possibly the laziest person I’ve ever seen on this site. What else do you want me to tell you? Should I start giving you a lecture on film?

This isn’t an easy industry, so if you’re not seriously into it, you won’t go anywhere.

1) Go to Barnes & Noble.
2) Buy this book: [Amazon.com: Filmmaking for Teens: Pulling Off Your Shorts (9781932907049): Troy Lanier, Clay Nichols: Books](http://www.amazon.com/Filmmaking-Teens-Pulling-Your-Shorts/dp/1932907041/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1250314715&sr=1-1) .
3) Make a short (less than 5 minute) film.
4) Spend some time on this forum: [Filmmakers Forums - Filmmakers Forums, Cinematography Forums, Camera Forums, Lighting Forums, Directing Forums, Screenwriting Forums](http://www.studentfilmmakers.com/bb/) . Do a lot of reading before you start asking questions.
5) Make another film. Do it right. Learn to tell a story with the camera; that’s what filmmaking is.
6) Go here to find festivals in which to enter your film: https://www.withoutabox.com/
7) Lather, Rinse, Repeat :)

You can also look on Craigslist under “Gigs” and “Crew”. There are often ads by directors seeking volunteer crew members. Go volunteer on some film sets and learn what it’s all about. Help others with their films and hopefully they will help you with yours.

thank you very much timely.

and pandem on forums questions are meant to be asked fool

first off xkgx, pandem was just trying to make a point that if you want to do films without going to school, it’s going to take a lot of self drive. and I mean a LOT. the film industry is hard and you’re going to have do a lot of hard work. without school as a motivator of sorts, you’ll need to be a lot more motivated. and when pandem said you were lazy I think what he/she was trying to say was that if you’re looking to go into film, you should have probably already done your own research and figured out some of this stuff already.

people asking in the forums usually have at least a general to good understanding of what schools are out there as well as how to obtain the knowledge they need. Obviously you could have made it a little easier by asking if there were any specific books.

“explain where i can learn how to make films” is so general it makes it seem like you’re lazy and unmotivated and I doubt that was your intent.

in my opinion nothing beats being around people who are just as enthusiastic about the field you’re in. Whether it’s at film school or by yourself. just go out and get as much experience as you can. the more you engage the more you get out of it.

Also: Film school should be a lot more expensive than 10k. I don’t know many colleges that cost 10k anymore. try 30-40

mpifilm.com Only film school in Michigan. 10 grand a year

I’m on a forum asking questions, quite bringing up laziness that is very annoying. If i was lazy I wouldn’t come on here and ask different people there views.

Yes, you are lazy. You’re asking questions that are easily answerable with research.Don’t expect to be successful in any field if you want other people to do your work.

Pandem makes a good point that when you really want to pursue something, the best first step is research. While it’s true that asking questions on a forum can be a valuable part of that research, it shouldn’t come first. As I always tell my kids, Google is your friend.

If you google things like: career film director, you will find some sites with valuable info. After you have done a good bit of reading there, you will be able to go to a forum such as this one and ask more specific questions. The question you asked would literally take a book to answer. Speaking of books, you can go to any bookstore and they’ll have a filmmaking section. There are books in there about how to become a director.

Again, I am NOT saying that you should not come here and ask questions. That’s why the forum is here. But just that you will get much more valuable answers if you have gotten some background knowledge first.

acctually pandem stay off my threads cause your NO GOOD. This is more direct than google.

Thank you for your answer timely

First off, grow up and stop acting like you’re twelve.

However, if you are indeed twelve, I apologize for demanding something so unreasonable from you.

If you’re too lazy to do your own research, you’re not going to be making films. If the research is too much work for you, I can’t fathom how you’ll accomplish film making. From your threads, I’d actually be surprised if you managed to overcome your slothfulness to send in college applications.

I never said i would accomplish film making lol I was just asking a simple little question.

Tough crowd Tough crowd
