Important GPA question

For the first semester as a freshman in the college of engineering, is it difficult to achieve and exceed a 3.0 GPA?

I’ve heard Orgo chem and Calc II are notorious gpa killers (not particularly for engineering, just in general), so if you take those 2 first semester, then maybe.

IMO, I’d say the sooner you get them out of the way the better, since at least you can show upward improvement.

Engineering has some pretty tough classes that I think they’re generally curved to a B-/B. And I think the Engineering equivalent of Calc II is considered harder than Calc II. Is it difficult to achieve a 3.0 in Engineering? It depends on the person. Engineering seems to be one of those where individuals has a wider range of required effort to do the same thing. Some Engineers are in the library all the time trying to get the problem sets done, whereas other students are gifted and have the ability to apply what they see in lecture almost immediately and finish the problem sets rather quickly. I had friends in Engineering at both extremes.

That said, if you put the work in, a 3.0 is more than manageable; but I would say putting the work in can be difficult, especially depending on the type of person you. Cornell is a great way to learn a good work ethic, and that’s certainly not a bad thing.
