Important information when applying for Housing at University of New Mexico

I detailed the full story in another thread, but it is important for anyone considering UNM to know, when you apply for Housing your contract has to be cancelled separate from your notification to the university that you are not attending. Our daughter was very interested in UNM, applied, was accepted and received a generous scholarship. Based on the suggestion of staff and students, she signed up for housing before deciding if she would attend. She ended up not attending UNM and notified the university and department that awarded her the scholarship as soon as she determined she would not attend.

Fast forward several months, our daughter is in her 1st year at another school and she started to receive bills for a “no show fee” plus interest, because she did not cancel her housing contract. Over the next month we spent many, many hours calling and emailing only to be told, “tough luck. She signed a contract and didn’t cancel.” If a student decides not to attend UNM, the student must cancel any housing separately. This seemed crazy to us, that declining the offer for admission would not be enough but it was not.

Eventually we had to submit a formal appeal (which took several hours to prepare) and the charges were removed. Hopefully someone can learn from our mistake.

I just want to point out that several of the dorms on UNM’s campus are privately owned–including one of the most popular dorms for freshmen. (Casas del Rio)

UNM 's admisson/enrollment does not interface with the management of these dorms.

The terms and conditions of the leases with ACC for Casas del Rio and Lobo Village are different from the terms students agree to when they sign up with UNM for UNM Housing. Students and families should work directly with ACC to address concerns about the lease, residence, or property at Casas del Rio and Lobo Village. The University of New Mexico cannot intervene with ACC on issues related to a student’s ACC lease, Casas del Rio or Lobo Village residence or the condition of ACC property.
