IMPORTANT: Links to AUTOMATIC/GUARANTEED Merit Scholarships

chicago, do you know if Miami merit scholarshops continue for four yrs or are these teaser / bait scholarships only good for the first yr?

^^^
What does the website say? Usually college scholarships are for 4 years…unless specified differently. Often a GPA must be maintained.

Of course you can always email/call the FA office to be sure.

Roderick - My S got an automatic scholarship at Miami for this fall (2010). It is renewable for four years with at 3.0 GPA. His as for $9,000 a year - maybe they will raise his for next year. We heard rumors that if you do well, the merit awards can be increased as an upper classman.

You guys might find that some schools in the ND, SD, and MN extremely cheap for OOS students. I believe the entire OOS cost of attendance for South Dakota State University is around $13k

^And SD is a beautiful state (but I’ve only visited in summer)!

Gb, by really, really good plans, do you mean those schools that guarantee to meet 100% of need with no/low loans? If so, there are a number of schools that are not in the uber-stats, 10% or less admissions, category that have made these pledges. The list here could work for a much wider range of students:

Great link sk8rmom!

I knew of some of these schools but not all of them. Thanks so much.

South carolina state university.Full ride.Minimum SAT 1200/1600.pays for room, board, tuition and up to $400 in books, plus health insurance

^^^^

That is not an automatic scholarship according to the website.

The words are…

*To be considered for this scholarship the student must:

Rank in the top twenty percent of the senior class

Present a minimum score of 1200 (CR + M) on the SAT, or ACT composite score of 27

GPA of 3.25 on a 4.00 scale*

Let’s keep this thread for assured scholarships. There are many, many schools with competitive scholarships, but it’s nice to know of the assured scholarships.

Hey, does anyone have any other scholarships for the Northeast or Cali? Thanks :)

There aren’t many ASSURED scholarships in Calif or the NE at the more well-known schools.

UDayton has some - scroll down to see the req’d stats.

There are some assured merit at lesser known schools.

How much will your parents pay each year and how much do you need?

Students who are interested in an affordable LAC can look at Truman State’s scholarships

Approximate costs:
Tuition: In-state: $6,458; OOS: $11,856;
Other costs (Room/Board/etc): $6,570 (cheapest) to $8,020 (most expensive)

Link to matrix and info:
[Truman Scholarships - Office of Admission - Truman State University](<a href=“Admission | Truman State University”>Admission | Truman State University)

Details
Look at the matrix to figure out your award. It’s not a lot, but it does shear down costs. There are additional (guaranteed) scholarships for IB students, alumni children, etc… All except the alumni scholarship do not distinguish between in-state and OOS.

Examples:

 1. A student applying with a GPA of 3.7 and an ACT of 30 would get a scholarship of $3000.

A student with an SAT score of 1950 (= ACT 30) and a GPA of 3.5 would get $2500.

A student in the top 9% of his or her HS class with a 36 ACT would get $3000.

A student that completes the IB Diploma Programme gets $2000 in addition to whatever other scholarships he or she qualified for.

A school with OOS Suny prices would be great. I don’t think any SUNY is a great fit for me though. I found Emmaunuel College in Boston, I don’t think it is guaranteed though.

[Tuition & Aid – Emmanuel College](http://www.emmanuel.edu/x2291.xml)

they way they word it seems to indicate so

bookmarked

any of these for transfers?

Some of them have transfer scholarships, the amounts are always lower

*any of these for transfers? *

There are very few good-sized scholarships for transfer students since schools use scholarships to get the best incoming freshman class.

That can be very disappointing to those who could have gotten a good scholarship for their freshmen year from various schools, but went somewhere else first.

Early, there are 64 SUNY/CUNY schools…they are all quite different and many of them were private schools before the SUNY system came into existence (NY was the last state to establish a state university sytem). If you post what you’re looking for on the SUNY General forum, you may get some targeted suggestions. Many of the SUNY’s offer merit aid and often give the higher scholarships to OOS students…but the scholarships differ by campus.

*Many of the SUNY’s offer merit aid and often give the higher scholarships to OOS students…but the scholarships differ by campus. *

Just curious…which SUNYs give good merit to OOS students? I’m assuming that the higher amounts are to help cover OOS costs?

This will be slightly OT as many SUNY’s don’t publish merit requirements and/or the qualifications vary by cohort but, to answer M2CK’s question, almost every SUNY that offers merit aid to freshmen (note this does not include Binghamton and Geneseo) either offers a higher award to OOS students, has a separate scholarship specifically for OOS students, and/or has a lower merit threshold for OOS students. Many also have separate scholarships for international students (but that’s a whole 'nother thread).

For example, Fredonia’s instate Presidential is $3k/year, but the OOS Presidential is $5K. UB’s instate merit awards (qualifications vary by applicant pool) range from $3K-full ride, but OOS kids with equivalent stats are awarded $5K or more and it seems the same method used by Stony Brook . Oswego’s Presidential scholarships are $4400/year (with a 94 average/1240 SAT), however the $6900 merit scholarship for OOS students requires only a 91 average and 1160 SAT. All of these amounts seem relatively low for merit aid until you consider that tuition at any 4 year SUNY is only $4,970 instate/$12,870 OOS (fees vary by campus but are generally around $1K/yr).

Other SUNYs that offer merit aid include:
Cortland - $2500 for min 90 avg/1100 SAT, OOS students are eligible for an additional $2500 “Future NY’er” award that has no stated merit component

Plattsburg -starts at $1K for instate min 90 avg/1000 SAT but would be $3500 for an OOS student with equivalent stats (and OOS awards have a lower cutoff), calculator available on website

ESF (Syracuse) - up to $3K instate or $6K OOS (varies by pool) cutoff is 90 avg/1200 SAT

This is not a comprehensive list…I know that Albany, Brockport, and others offer merit aid and allude to residency being a factor in the amounts but they simply don’t publish details on their websites!
