I was wondering whether or not Columbia truly places equal emphasis on the writing section of the SAT as on the Math and Verbal. I'm worried, as I will be applying ED to SEAS and my SAT score is 2270 overall, but only 1500 with just math and reading. (Math: 740; Reading:760) I have heard contradictory responses to this question, and I apologize if this question has already been asked, but I simply couldn't find the answer to my question by searching this forum or Columbia's website. Maybe I'm just really bad at searching :P Nevertheless, I would really appreciate it if anyone could tell me what the true case is, along with a supporting link if possible. :)

Your SATs -- all 3 of them -- are as good as they need to be to have a shot at Columbia, and higher scores won't really do you much good. So your question doesn't really matter.

wow 1500 on CR and M...you probably shouldn't even bother applying...thats like an autoreject right there

Yes, as of this year, Columbia began really considering the writing scores along with the math and critical reading--no link, but that is from the mouth of an admissions officer this past October.

For the previous two years, every school you visited said they weren't emphasizing the writing section because they hadn't "collected enough data" about it, but as a rule I believe most schools have started considering it by now.

NightOwl is correct. I stumbled across this when I was applying. Here's a link:

Moving forward, Columbia University will now consider the writing section of the SAT as we review standardized test scores.

You'll find that on page three of the newsletter. And don't worry about your scores, they're where they need to be. Best of luck!

Yeah, your scores are really great!

haha are you fcking joking?

only a couple HUNDRED students a year get scores in your range so just chill out lol

2270? And you're worried?

....

HONESTLY. Chill.
And they better consider the writing score, it's my highest! (790 :D) My Math on the other hand... sucky. No SEAS for me. CAS CAS CAS!

Um, its CC, this isn't cornell or penn buddy.

Actually, about 10,000 get 2270+. It's still a great score, just not enough to set him apart from other applicants.

I don't think he needs to set himself apart anymore (in terms of SAT scores); a 2270 is good enough to show that he can beat the SAT.

yea I was exaggerating for effect lol

well first of all, i'm a girl not a guy. LOL and thanks for replying everyone! I'm definitely satisfied with my SAT score, but writing just happened to be my highest so I was wondering if it was even counted. Anyway, thanks for answering my question. :)

did you get a likely letter?

"important" of sat writing score... did you mean "importance"?? no wonder you didn't get a 800 on writing!! :)

aikomodori: I will be applying next year, but wouldn't that have been cool! ;)
coolkid007: hey! i didn't even realize that until now. LOL

um 1500 is decent but not spectacular.
nygirl, since you're a junior, if you feel you can do better, it wouldn't be unreasonable to retake. but it is a solid score and you could probably focus on other aspects at this point.

and I don't really understand why you're fretting about the writing section. 2270 and 1500 are virtually the same scores, so it doesn't make a difference for you..

1500?
A decent score?

You're a funny man, you should do stand-up.

Yeah, I'm sorry it's not 1600, right?
