Important Question About GPA And Transferring

For now, I am NOT planning to transfer out, I am just curious about this.

If one were to send in transfer apps for Fall 2008 as a freshman, would the colleges that person applies to look at 1st & 2nd semester grades or only 1st?

Fall semester grades only. Most application deadlines are in January-February. Around the time you'll be getting back the Spring semester grades the person will already have the decision from the college.

most are in march actually, but yes your fall grades will be very important

There is no standard policy in regard to the submission of second semester grades. Some admission committees require transfers to submit both first and second semester grades; others require only first semester grades. The best way to find out the policy of a particular admissions office is to review their website.

Bumping this up again.

I would be very happy to stay at Duke, but I may want to try to send transfer apps to Brown or Columbia. I have made plenty of friends here, but I feel like those schools are better social fits for me. I would have chose both of these schools over Duke last year, but I didn't get in either one. Also one of the reasons why I chose Duke over Dartmouth last year was because I felt like I was going to major in chemistry, but now I am heading more so on a math or economics route, makes me want to rethink things a little bit. Even though Dartmouth definitely has a similar social scene, I may want to send an app here because Dartmouth is definitely more intellectual than Duke.

Here's the deal though. I think I'm only going to get around a 3.2-3.5 GPA this semester. I didn't study for my first set of midterms over September and suffered from that. I know that my second semester GPA will likely be higher, so if I end up with a 3.3 GPA but have a 3.8-4.0 second semester, how would this affect my chances at Brown or Columbia? I'm just curious because I'm still deciding whether I will take a second shot or not.

Can't hurt to apply right? Worst that will happen is you'll be stuck at Duke, how tragic (just kidding).. I'm transferring too but for Spring 08' so admissions (at TCNJ) will look at me solely on my hs grades.. I too haven't studied much and suffered
