I’d say your first question is a definite no. 4000 internationals overall applied this year (Dean Shaw’s words) and I think (from what I’ve seen and heard) about 65-70% of those students did not apply for aid. So that’s about 2700, add in a rough estimate for international acceptance of 7% and that’s 189 admitted. The figures are even lower for financial aiders, so yes, it is slightly tougher to get in with aid but I think the overall difficulty is overblown here. Stanford has a $13 billion endowment so they’re not going to take some dumbas-s who can pay over a genius in an Indian village in nowhere. Financial aid is one of the strongest in the country.

As to the overall quality of both the no financial aiders and the financial aiders, I have no idea, but I can imagine it’s one of the best in the country.

For the record, I’m an international who asked for aid (got very little) and was waitlisted. Not sure if me asking for aid was what didn’t get me accepted first round, but I’d like to think it was my relatively low GPA.
