Important Question-ACT

Hello, I am currently a junior in high school. I would really like to go to University of Missouri at Columbia…but I have a few questions:

Do I have to take the ACT. I have never even looked into the ACT. I did good on the SAT (not amazing) but good. I really don’t want to take the ACT.

Is this school associated with the other Columbia or if not, what does the Columbia stand for? Thanks.

School of Journalism…I heard it is amazing. Any tips/suggestions on what I can do now? I am editor-in-chief of my school paper, editor of school literary magazine, and probably will be copyeditor of yearbook next year. I live in Philadelphia and most of the local paper internships go to the college students. What can I do now to improve my chances. Thank you.

Also, are there double major programs?

What do many of the school of journalism students go to grad school. I would like to go to Columbia for grad school. Thank you.

Sorry for all this,
samantha

Im not sure about the ACT...i think theyll take the SAT...Columbia MO is where the school is located...i dont think you need to do much more else if youre that heavily involved...good essay wouldnt hurt, although its not required...yeah, we have double majors....i really dunno what youre trying to ask with the last question. get back to me.

Nope, ACT is not required for UM admission or scholarship at all. I was directly admitted to UM Journalism Honors and only took SAT I + II.

Nope, University of Missouri - Columbia has no affiliation with Columbia University/College. It's just the name of the town where the school is located.

You definitely have an edge over someone like me who was admitted to the school strictly on overall merit and I took no Journalism course nor was I involved with my school's newspaper. You'd be surprised how relatively easy it is to get automatic admission to MU Journalism. For an in-stater like me, I only had to have 1270 SAT and be in top 10% of school for automatic admission. To apply, you could have lower score and still get in.

Yes, I believe so. I think I will be attending UM next year as double major in Journalism and Political Science. Even so, it is wiser to apply as a Journalism student, not for the other major.

It really depends. Some even finish their education entirely and since UM's Journalism has about 100% job guarantee within 6 months of graduation, it's really easy to get a job after graduating from J-school. A lot of Journalism honors students attend prestigious law schools. I personally know a couple UM Journalism graduates last year who were admitted to Harvard Law and WashU Law. As long as you maintain good GPA at school, getting into a good graduate school shouldn't be really a problem.

I just went through the process of applying to Mizzou. Mizzou uses the ACT score in determing entrance to the university and into the Honors College, and moreover, Missouri uses it to determine Bright Flight Scholarships. I have a 30 on the ACT and I was accepted into the Honors College at Mizzou, the Pre-Vet Scholars program, and I was awarded the Bright Flight Scholarship.

I know the university also takes SAT scores, but I do not know the ranges that translate to ACT scores.

Good luck!

1280 is a 30 and generally required for the Honors College.
