How should I approach the TAs/professors that I want to write my recommendations? I feel awkward for some reason...
I'm at home right now; I don't go back to school until like the end of January. Is that too late to wait? Is it necessary to contact them now (e-mail?)

I think you should contact them by email-- thats what i did. However, two of them have not responded. I guess they are enjoying their vacation.

I would advise to do everything as formally as possible and that for a letter of recommendation you might want to drop by after winter break to their office. They might want to talk to you about transferring to get a better idea of who you are and what you want from college, this would allow them to do so. If your due dates are before the beginning of the next semester, then email.

Do it in person. It forces you to confront with the reality that you're making a difficult decision to transfer out and it's a good practice for the future when you have to tell the people you worked hard to earn their respect that you're leaving them.

I forgot to mention that I had contacted them in person beforehand. However, since you asked if it was too late, thats why i said you should email them instead.

is a month enough time?
also, since i go to a really large school it's somewhat easier said than done to drop by their office hours. i'd have to e-mail them initially to make an appointment. should i mention it in an e-mail?
i'm kind of thinking out loud.
sorry if these questions are redundant.
