important question

hey all,

I am currently attending SUNY-stony brook as a freshman and I feel like this school isn't a good fit for me at all. I am considering transferring to Columbia or NYU. Columbia appeals to me because of its core curriculum that will diversify my education and its location in new york city. NYU has great programs as well.

My problem is that I currently have a first semester gpa of 3.53 :/ and I don't know if I should bother applying to both schools at all. Should I apply this year or wait another year and get my gpa up? thanks

BUMP

any input would be appreciated

I don’t know much about those schools so I can’t say much about that.

But have you considered other SUNY’s? You’d already have transferable credits because of the whole suny ger’s. Just a thought.

im actually trying to get out of the suny system here.

Perhaps consider a mid-semester transfer next year? Or even going into junior year. A 3.53 isn’t bad, but it’s probably not enough for Columbia. If you take another semester or two and get it up you might have a better chance.

What were your HS grades, rank, and test scores? I believe they will consider them if you have fewer than 30 college credits. An important question to consider is, can you and your family afford Columbia or NYU? I assume you know that NYU is practically the poster child for expensive schools who offer little FA.

@sk8rmom. my hs grades were pretty good and i graduated in the top 10 percent. The financial situation is different for both colleges as columbia awards generous aid and honestly I would say my family is lower middle class (income bracket around 30k). I know NYU is notorious for their finaid but these are things to consider after my decision if anything.

If I included the reason for my 3.5 on the app and that I have learned from my mistakes which were poor time management skills and influental friends, and that I am willing to improve upon them. will NYU and columbia consider this?

I doubt Columbia and NYU would accept too much socializing as a reason for a lower than necessary GPA. I would strongly recommend raising your GPA with another semester before applying. They will consider you HS record because you’re a freshman, but college GPA is still going to be the most important facto in the decision.
