I've heard that when it comes to sending supplementary materials, it's not strictly only arts or music. Can I send different kinds of supplementary materials such as an essay or poem? Does anyone know where the information on supplementary materials is on the website? I found part of it, but it only talks about arts and music, but I have heard other people sending other stuff... so how?!

they do accept supplementary recommendations but not without sufficient reason... Yale's website says they "discourage" students who send in supplementary recommendations just for the sake of doing it. I had one from a Jesuit institute i used to volunteer at. Didn't send it in after I read that though...

Don't know about essays and poems, but it stands to reason that if you have 1) great grades in difficult Eng Lit courses and/or 2) have prizes and recognition form poetry/essay contests, then they'll know about your skills anyway. If you have neither of the above, then ask the teachers to remember your writing skills or something...

My point is that there are usually other ways of saying the things that might be on your supplementary materials. Redundancy is a pitfall for many zealous applicants. Your ability to condense yourself as well as possible on the space allotted is probably a part of what the admits are looking for. Good luck! Stay Sane! Only 9 days left!

http://www.yale.edu/admit/faq/applying.html <<< this is useful for some of your questions as well.

So i just found out yesterday that my counsler sent THREE teacher recs!!! I had asked my 10th grade teacher to write one, but then decided i only wanted to use her for some schools which didn't explicitly say "ONLY 11th and 12th grade teachers". So altogehter i asked 3 teachers even tho i had the intention of only sending 2 to each school.

Would sending 3 recs UNintentially hurt me?!?

It wouldn't "hurt" you per se... they might be a little irritated if they all say the same thing...

I sent three recs (2 from academic teachers and 1 from my debate coach) because I felt like the extra one from my debate coach really showed another side of me that might not be readily apparent in my app. It was also a really well-written rec, lol.

I'm not too worried about it. I don't think it'll make or break my app, really.
