ok so im going to nyu and im registered for the Calc. I placement test. ive never taken any calculus. would it be to my detriment to not take the calculus and take a precalc class or cals and algebra class and get a better grade because i am desperate to get to yale. so if i magically pass the placement test then it might be a real struggle to keep up in the class. any comments would be greatly appreciated!

Bump please I need to make a decsion asap! thanks again in advance

To help yourself decide, see if you can locate any of these:
*Placement test practice test (ask the testing center)
*Textbook which would be used in the Calculus I class

Take the Practice test, see if it is feasible for you to pass.
Read the first chapter in the Calc. text which you would be covering in the class if you took it. If you find yourself able to follow the book, and able to do the example problems, then you will probably do well in the class if you apply yourself consistently.

If you decide to go for it, keep working through that textbook ahead of the rest of the class, do your homework, read your syllabus, and you will win.

Wait. Have you taken the appropriate pre-calc classes in highschool, or would you have to learn algebra and trig along with the differentials if you took this class? If you have had pre calc. though, even if it was a while ago, I think you will be best off going for the Calc. I. If you haven't had the appropriate pre calc, and you aren't crazy enough to REALLY work through all that pre-requisite on your own in the weeks before fall starts, then its safer to just sign up for the algebra and trig.

PS:
Personally, Calc I was easier than College Algebra.
... But that might have only been because I had already gotten through College Algebra.

Actually, it might depend on the teacher of the class more than anything. I would much rather take an over-my-head math class with an engaging teacher than an easy math class with a hateful one.
