Important Questions about Oberlin- for me and you

hey everyone. I’m new to this site but I’m wondering a few things about Oberlin. I visited and researched Oberlin and I really like it but there were a few things that I was wondering about?

How is the science program, I’ve heard it was good but I just wanted to know if any of you know anything about it/

Does anyone know about the Tennis Team- Varsity, Club and Intramurals.
Does anyone know how good it is? Also is intrumurals sports popular at all, cause I love athletics.

How is Oberlin’s scholarships/fin aid. Do they give a good deal of merit based scholarships? Do they only give aid to applicants who have 100% need

Bonner Scholars- Does anyone know anything about it or how to apply. It’s Oberlin’s program in which you do community service for fin aid. That would be sweet.

I read the social life thread and it was informative but just wondering if anyone else had anything to say. I love to partake in social activities so just wondering if social life plays a big part in Oberlin ( also does anyone know anything about the Drag ball, i heard that was pretty fun).

Thanks everyone, I’ve applied RD for fall of 06 but still not sure where I’m going. It’s pretty much between Oberlin and Wash U. If anybody has any information they could share that would be awesome.

There are top-notch programs there in neuroscience and environmental science. The basic biology, chemistry and physics programs are quite good for an undergrad-only liberal arts college (LAC) but do not have quite the lab facilities or breadth of courses that you would find at some larger schools.

They have very good ultimate frisbee teams (The Preying Manti women's team and the Flying Horsecows men's team.) In past years, their reputation at most other sports has not been great, winning them acclaim as a school full of "dodge-ball targets" at one online ratings site. I hear that they are trying to make up for that by actively recruiting a number of athletes this year and on an ongoing basis. I am not sure about tennis or intramurals there. The Phys Ed department offers an extensive variety of interesting electives and the gym is rather nice.

I do not know the numbers for the college. Merit aid is very good at the conservatory, with something like a third of the accepted students being offered Dean's Scholarships of roughly $8K to $12K per year, renewable for four or even five years if you double major. These are highly dependent on what voices or instruments they need and the level of accomplishment of the applicant.

Sorry, don't know about the Bonner program.

They seem like a social lot. With fewer than 3000 students (college plus conservatory) split among straight/gay/lesbian/bi/transgendered/transexual and possibly other orientations, the pool of potential partners of the appropriate gender and preference could be either a lot smaller or a lot larger than you would expect. In addition to the Drag Ball, ask an Obie about Safer Sex Night.

The music scene is reportedly quite excellent, no matter what your musical tastes.

I can attest to the recruiting athletes bit. I get calls almost daily from the track and cross country coaches at Oberlin. They are very actively trying to raise the level of every one of their teams. The coaches were great during the application process, running stuff by adcoms before i submitted it. I don't think the intramural scene is huge but I think that is changing and if i get in, there will be at least two of us.

The Bonner program looks interesting. If I find out more about it, I'll post it here.

I visited Oberlin a couple years ago, and I have friends there. There was certainly stuff to do. My hosts were pretty content with taking massive bong hits and getting pitchers at the sco but there is a lot to do beyond that. As a runner, with asthma, I don't partake but still found activities to keep me busy and to keep it at the top of my list.

does anyone know anything about the tennis program at Oberlin.
just wondering

Mike--
You're not apt to get very informed answers to your questions at this site, since most of the other people on it are high school students like you (who don't have direct knowledge of Oberlin). Better to address your questions to http://www.livejournal.com/community/obie_questions/. Good luck!

Hey im going to oberlin to play on the tennis team... and here's what ive heard after being in contact with the coach for some time....
The team is amazing by the way, I met all the guys and girls and they are so mcuh fun!!
I suggest you call the head coach, don hussinger, hes a hell of a guy, and if you do tell him Francesca sent you (his up and comming frosh)
The guys team has had success in the past but is now in sortof a slump... the girls are amazing though. they are one of the best in their division (Kenyon, Denison, Earlham, Allegheney, Ohio Wesleyan ect.)
The thing I loved about the tennis program is the easy load of it all. Only 5 practices a week while in season (2hrs per day)....plus one ladder match per week, and then captains practice in the off season, which aren't required.
The tennis team also goes to South Carolina during the spring break for a tournament and gets a house all to themselves. The coach has a deal with wilson, so all of your rackets, shoes, bags and clothing are on the house
and plus varsity athletes at oberlin get free laundry, done everyday by the laundry ppl (yea itsnt that awesome!!!)
so come to oberlin, what could be better
