IMPORTANT scheduling soon!

Hey i have a situation and i am unclear in what to do. i am soon goin to be registering my classes for sophomore year and a little backround information is that i am a biochemistry major with an interest to study abroad my junior year, but in order to study abroad all of my pre-med classes must be completed before i leave. this leaves me with two situations either to take 3 lab sciences sophomore year.... Honors organic, molec cell/genetics, and physics but i most likely will not be able to fit this in with my schedule. my other choice is to take physics over the summer in order to finish the pre-meds in time.
i know that adcoms look down upon taking classes over the summer especially pre-med classes but being i am a biochemistry major and will be taking much more difficult sciences than physics, which will demonstrate my ability to handle science, is it better for me to take the course over the summer in order to study abroad, or forget about going abroad and take the physics some other year or the same year?

thanx

I don't think taking classes at your home institution or a comparable institution causes problems at all.

It's just annoying to do that, because it often precludes medically related ECs over the summer.

o well i have heard that it does becasue it is a class designed to measure your ability and if u take it in an easy schedule during the summer it doesnt quite compare to taking it in a 5 courses per semester setting. yea i do undeerstand what your saying about EC's though as i would have to schedule work and volunteer around the class

While I agree that it SHOULD be the case that summer classes should be looked down upon, I've always been told (by the best advising team in the country, here at Duke) that it simply isn't.

Still, there's an opportunity cost involved.

yea im not really sure what to do....i guess ill have to just go with what i feel i would wanna do more instead of what they would want me to do.

PS i goto BC u better not hope for a rematch in the NCAA finals cause well get you then :)

My hope is for a UConn matchup!

If we win the champtionship - and I think we've got as good a shot as anyone - I want it to be with the hardest road possible. Anything less isn't worth as much.

PS: One of my oldest and dearest high school friends is at BC at the moment, so it's hard to hold any real animosity for your school.

hahah well for me its the opposite....i know someone at duke but that doesnt stop me from hating JJ reddick and especially Greg Paulus. by far the person i dislike more than anyone. i wouldnt mind if you guys lost in the sweet 16 but a loss to us in the championship would be awesome, providing we can get there.

hahah anyway this is not a NCAA bball thread so ill end it with that...thanx for the advice even though i still have not concluded what to do.

O yea and not to demean your advising committee but like i posted in another thread our school had various medical school deans of admissions come to our school for a presentation. The schools included were Harvard med, cornell med, tufts med, BU med, and UMASS med and they did mention that taking summer courses, especially pre-med courses over the summer is looked down upon and they would prefer to see you take it in a regular, challenging setting. The did however say that in special circumstances they dont frown upon summer pre-med classes but they were vague, which is what sparked my question.

Ill have to ask my pre-med advising committee and maybe send a few e-mails out to the med schools i am interested in and find an answer...thanx tho

In that case, it represents an improvement to the process, which I am glad to see! Summer classes should be frowned upon by adcoms, and I was always a little disappointed to hear that they weren't.

yea i contacted them about there specific situations and they said a couple situations can allow summer courses to be taken. if you say it is to allow you to study abroad they are ok with it. if you take other sciences courses as difficult or more difficult than physics, they are fine with it. they did say however despite the situation try not to take more than one pre-med over the summer

being i am a science major who wants to study abroad im sure that its ok and i am going to go abroad and take it over the summer.

O btw duke lost that sux
