Hi, I need to know when I should ask my teachers for recommendations. The bad thing is that last Monday was the first time I had talked to my teacher since junior year got out (talked with him for like 1 hour before school started). I dont want to make it look like I just talked to him because I want him to write a recommendation for me. That being said, when should I ask him to write it if apps are due on Jan 1? Should I wait until end of Oct or middle Nov? THANKS!!!

I'd say the earlier the better. Sometimes teachers put a limit on how many letter they're willing to write. Also, giving them more notice is always a good thing; just be sure to follow up a few weeks before you need the letters to make sure they haven't forgotten.

when: last month

..jk :P

but ASAP

do it now. follow up in a couple of weeks.

I asked my teachers first week of school and they're already sent out... I need to get them to send one to Duke because I decided to apply there just this week... I hope they saved the recommendation letter, lol

wait until you know which schools you are applying to. Nothing is more annoying to a teacher than to get a request for reqs to 3 schools, than a few weeks later a request to add "two more" than a week after that "here's my final school". They prefer to do them all at once for a student.

ASK them ASAP...get it in their minds that they will be writing for you...then present them with all materials for most/all schools within a week

When my son asked (giving six weeks notice) he was told he was 12th in line. That was fine, because he gave LOTS of time to the teachers. The earlier, the better--be sure to give the teachers an addressed, STAMPED envelope for each recommendation, and let them know if you think there may be additional schools later on. It is extremely unfair to teachers to wait until Thanksgiving- and Christmas-breaks and expect them to rush to meet January deadlines.

I would not wait, remember he/she will likely have many to write. Hene, may not do as good a job if rushed.
