Important Work Study/Residency Question

So, I currently go to Temple and was in-state for this year. My family moved to New Jersey, which would change my residency to out-of-state. If I were to do work-study and file a tax return, would that make me a resident of PA? And is there any other way to make myself a resident of PA?

No, doing work study won’t change it. Look to see if you lose your residency if your parents move. Sometimes you do not, sometimes you don’t for a year, etc. You have to check.

No. You need to file a tax return based on your actual residency. Usually college is not the permanent residency address. If you end up being a NJ resident, you will file taxes as a NJ resident…and if required, will file in PA as a non-resident.

I think you will be okay since you entered Temple as a resident. If not you can challenge it. I recommend you maintain your intention to remain a PA resident for living and working after college.

For sure don’t assume your status changes at all.
