IMPORTANT!

I had a query. I applied to some ivy league schools( HYPDB) but got rejected. I got accepted into NYU new York with hefty scholarship. I also got accepted to several other institutes such as MCGILL. However I wont be able to enroll at any of these institutes due to finance. I also gave few exams during my gap year in 2014. My stats

GCSE/O LEVEL: 7 A’s and 5 A grades
A level: 3 A and 2 B
Good EC
1940 on SAT.

I wanted to know whether I might get in I I reapply. Mainly because of finance. I need full funding to ensure a place ata university. I plan to apply to need blind school Amherst College ED
Do I have any chances of success?

Should I give the ACT this year?
Should I reapply to YALE as well. Do I have a shot.

Your SAT isn’t great for Ivy League. I would advise retaking, and if you think you’ll do well on the ACT, go for it. Any B’s at all automatically bring down your chances, so try and keep grades as high as possible. I advise applying to a less selective school where you’re above the average range for SAT scores and grades (after retaking) and hopefully get hefty merit scholarships. Why can’t you attend NYU if you have a scholarship, if finance is such a huge issue? You could try and get a job.

Did you apply SCEA/REA for any of them? Keep in mind that if you applied to all of them EA, it’s breaking the rules. And I’m pretty sure you aren’t allowed to reapply after being rejected.

Assuming you applied RA and got rejected and are now taking a gap year, go out and do something impressive to bring up your chances. Depending on your interests, it could range from starting a small business to an impressive scientific breakthrough.

I am an international applicant from Pakistan. I completed my A levels CIE from Pakistan in 2014. I did not apply to any school early this year. In a country such as Pakistan I do not have much avenues of achieving something similar to a business or breakthrough. In case of NYU I had to pay $35000 per year which was impossible. I received 30000 scholarship. Pls guide me as I only intend to apply to need blind schools as I know my financial conditions would severely affect my applications. I intend on applying to Amherst ED. What do you think do I have any chance if I get a good score on ACT.

While high stats won’t let you in, low stats will likely keep you out. With your 3A/2B A Level and 1940 SAT, your chance for HYPDB (and Amherst) will be slim to none.

Adding to that I had the toughest workload in my school.

I wont be applying to any ivy this year. I plan on giving the ACT this year. If I get a good score do I have a chance of getting into Amherst ED

Physics: A
Chemistry: A
Maths: A
Bio: B
Further maths: B

These subjects are the toughest A levels one can opt for and that too from CIE

There are currently only six U.S. colleges that offer need-blind financial aid and meet full demonstrated need for international students. These are:

  • Amherst College
  • Dartmouth College
  • Harvard University
  • Massachusetts Institute of Technology
  • Princeton University
  • Yale University

Each of these schools, including Amherst, expects applicants – especially international students who’s first language is not English – to have SAT scores above 2100.

So, unless you can get your SAT score above 2100 or score a composite ACT of 32+, I don’t think you have a chance at Amherst or any of the 5 other schools that offer need-based financial aid to international students.

You need to retake the SAT – and if your score on the SAT Critical Reading section is lower than 700 or lower than a 32 on the ACT reading section, you need to take the TOEFL to prove your English proficiency: https://www.amherst.edu/admission/apply/international
